With the recent announcement of the composite selection for OSF DME, our dear HP friends have been going around here telling customers that their user interface has been chosen. They are trying to capitalise on this by asking customers to get trained on HP Openview user interface. We have been very quick to counter those points here locally, and our customers still have faith in our product, because of its superiority in management that OSF DME cannot address. Question: We have seen so many marketing messages on this so far. What is the real impact of the OSF DME selection on DECmcc, from a technical perspective? Is our user interface going to change? Our APIs? .............. Is DME just going to be another type of PM, FM and AM? ......... Hope to get some real techinical answers. Thanks Raj ACT Singapore

I don't have all your answers but keep in mind that OSF is certainly
going to use Motif as the user interface. No question about that.

Some brief comments - expect to hear more in this or other forums soon.
It's interesting to note how much HP is making of the fact that
OpenView was NOT selected as the DME Framework - just a couple of
HPs components were selected. But you'd never know from the way they
are declaring victory. The real 'winner' is Tivoli.
We have studied the little information that OSF have made available on
the DME - in fact they haven't even designed the DME solution yet;
their architecture meetings start next month. We have a working,
shipping platform today, and we should continue to push this hard. We
will have a solution in the marketplace until OSF makes the DME
available - and that may be quite a long time!
We are not stopping work on MCC or EMA - there are significant benefits
from our technology (even discounting availability). We have decided to
pursue a coexistence and interoperability approach. On OSF systems, we
anticipate the DME and MCC will be able to sit side by side (if the
customer so chooses) - otherwise the customer can choose one or the
other, and they can be different on different systems.
The DME is clearly *not* aimed at solving the enterprise management
problem - just at the OSF cell environment. MCC is clearly aimed at
solving a bigger problem, and the DME is merely one of the environments
to be managed. For example, MCC will be able to managed SNA
environments, but the DME will not address SNA management.
As we learn more over the next year or two about what the DME will be,
we will be defining how MCC will interoperate with it. We also plan to
develop tools to allow moving applications from MCC to DME and vice
versa.
Meanwhile, our emphasis will be on developing applications. We have a
great platform in MCC, and we need to take advantage of it quickly, and
demonstrate to our customers what we can do with our own technology.
And OSF have kindly given us the opportunity to show what we can do in
the time it is going to take them to design a new management system to
sovle a smaller problem that MCC already addresses!

Don't forget the PM - Motif will be a key question of getting
acceptance from some U*IX users.
DECwindows PM is far to clumsy to sell ex-Motif users.
