    Hi,

    Last Friday, I installed the Vitalink TransLan AM (brought to the
    customer site by the local Vitalink sales support rep). It was a long
    install ~3 hours. At the end it said everything had installed
    correctly and the IVP passed. However now when I try to register a
    bridge, it gives me errors. The Translan_AM is apparently there and
    tests ok. Anyone have any ideas? Sample output follows:

    MCC> test mcc 0 translan_am

    MCC 0 TRANSLAN_AM
    AT 29-JUL-1991 15:30:44

    Test successful.

    MCC> show mcc 0 translan_am all char

    MCC 0 TRANSLAN_AM
    AT 29-JUL-1991 15:30:53 Characteristics

    Examination of attributes shows:
                   Component Identification = "DECmcc TransLAN AM"
                          Component Version = V1.0.0

    MCC> reg translan .bridges_us.um_data_center address=08-00-7c-00-23-b9

    TRANSLAN MCC_NS:.bridges_us.um_data_center
    AT 29-JUL-1991 15:31:15

    The requested operation cannot be completed
                          MCC Routine Error = %MCC-E-NOTFOUND, unsupported
                                        combination of verb, entity, partition

    I will greatly appreciate any information about this. The only thing I
    have found so far is that the updated .BPT file had protections on it
    that were different than the distributed version. I have changed
    those but this did not help. I also have two MCC line modes running
    that are currently recording statistics from other nodes as part of a
    throughput test. These can not be shutdown for a couple of days yet.
    The icons show up in the map PM and the windows come up asking for
    registration information, so at least the code is on the system.

    regards,

    Dave Comfort

| 1293.3 | Translan not in AM dispatch table | TOOK::MCPHERSON | i'm only 5 foot one... | Tue Jul 30 1991 16:40 | 26 |
| Strange. TRANSLAN (entity code 19) seems to be missing from the AM
dispatch tables... You haven't done anything *unusual* to this MCC system
have you? Is this a vanilla DECmcc system with no other a la carte AMs?
Try the following:
re-enroll the Translan AM
        MCC> ENROLL MCC_TRANSLAN_AM
try some Translan commands and see what happens.
If *that doesn't work,
try rebuilding the dispatch tables:
        $ rename MCC_COMMON:MCC_DISPATCH_TABLE.DAT *.DAT_OLD
        $ @sys$startup:mcc_startup_dir.com
        $ @sys$startup:mcc_startup_bms.com
        $ @sys$startup:mcc_startup_dir.com
        $ @sys$startup:mcc_translan_startup.com
        $ Mana/enter
        MCC> show mcc 0 translan AM all attr
Also make absolutely certain that you're using the *latest* .BPT file!
Post results here (relevant screen logs are useful).

    Hi,

    Here is the latest installment in the on-going saga. I should let you
    known a couple things.

    1) This MCC station is as vanilla as it gets.

    2) I'm going on two weeks vacation starting tomorrow (is it tomorrow
    yet?) so I won;t be able to try anything for a while and though I like
    customers, MCC and DEC, I will NOT be taking a terminal to the beach.

    3) My personal belief is that the savesets provided by the Vitalink rep
    are some sort of beta software, rather than the *REAL* thing.

    Anyway, here's the log (mistakes included)...

    thanks for your help and see ya later,

    dave

    Hi,

    I hope this note is still being monitored for the Translan AM problem I
    am having. I have just returned from vacation and would like to pick
    up where we left off. One piece of information I would like to
    trade...this version I got seems to be EFT 1.0-0 and I am curious as to
    which version is being run in-house. Outside of that, where do we go
    from here? Maybe an attempt to rebuild the parse tables (it took
    2 1/2 hours last time)? The MCC_PTB_PARSER.DAT file is still on the
    system, but I would need instruction.

    Anyway, I hope to hear from you all.

    Regards,

    Dave Comfort

| At this point I would suggest you do the following: - remove ALL traces of the Translan AM from the system (See the commands procedure at the bottom of this message. - do a cursory check of all of the MCC functions *without* the Translan AM and see if it's still working. - Copy the latest kit from MCDOUG::[TRANSLAN_AM]*.* and install that. Note that it says "Internal Use Only", so you can choose to do or not do this at your ownb risk (call your Vitalink rep, first). - Try the Translan AM all over again. - WATCH ALL OF THE STEPS ABOVE AND LOG ALL OF THE PROCEDURES TO A FILE so we can have a solid reference point in case something blows up. Doug,

    I'm at loose ends here. I copied down the internal distribution for
    your node and looked at and compared it to the one supplied to
    SmithKline by Vitalink. With the exception of the help file (yours is
    newer) and the kitinstal (modified to provide internal notification),
    they appear to be the same. I have not installed the internal one,
    however, I did remove translan_am supplied by VitaLink, and
    re-installed it. Following is a log of the install and the building of
    the help files, which appears run correctly. I note that entity 19 is
    processed during the parse table build. Is there some
    post-installation thing I have not done ? Also, I seem to remember when
    rebuilding the dispatch table for an attempt to fix this, *NOTHING*
    worked. Is it possible I have some corrupted MCC code or something? Is
    there anything I can look at to determine correct versions, etc. The
    DNS backtranslation directory for translans has been there since this
    saga began.

    I apologize for the vast amount of time and resources this is taking,
    but I don;t know where else to turn. I am in contact with VitaLink,
    however they cannot provide any assistance until next week.

    Thanks again,

    Dave

* Do you want to purge files replaced by this installation [YES]? no

* Do you want to update the MCC Dictionary [YES]?

 UPDATE THE DECMCC PARSE TABLES:
   Before you rebuild the parse tables, please make sure that
   your system has plenty of memory available, that your pagefile
   quota is at least 80000 and that your system's PAGEFILE.SYS is
   large enough to handle your pagefile quota as well as any
   other processes that may be running and need it.

   If your system is runnning tight on memory and/or you do not
   have enough Pagefile Quota, then your process may begin to
   page fault at a rapid rate and the parse table building
   process will slow to a creep and possibly fail.

   The process of rebuilding the parse tables to reflect the new
   Translan AM directives may take quite a while to complete
   (possibly as much as 1 to 3 hours) if you have a large
    dictionary and are running low on memory and pagefile.

* Do you want to update the DECmcc Parse Tables now [YES]?

* Do you want to update the MCC Help File [YES]? no

  You must update the DECmcc help file with the TRANSLAN AM's
  associated HELP information before you can use DECmcc's online
  HELP facility to look up information about Vitalink TRANSLANS
  within DECmcc.

   Following the copying of the files, the Translan AM
   start-up command procedure(s) will be invoked. Operational
   tables will be created by this procedure.

POST-INSTALLATION DECdns NAMESPACE CHANGES:

   DECmcc uses DECdns to store entity names. Translan bridge
   names are stored on your DECdns server in a directory called
   .MCC_TRANSLAN_BACKTRANSLATION.      This directory must be
   created before you can REGISTER Translan bridges. Failure
   to do so will result in an MCC error containing the
   DECdns error:  Entry not found.

   In addition, the user must have proper access to this DECdns
   directory in order to REGISTER, SHOW, DEREGISTER, and ERASE
   Translan entities.

   The DECmcc BMS/Director provides a mechanism for modifying
   your DECdns namespace. After the installation has completed,
   you should use the procedure MCC_SYSTEM:MCC_DNS_SETUP.COM
   to add the .MCC_TRANSLAN_BACKTRANSLATION directory to your
   namespace. The .MCC_TRANSLAN_BACKTRANSLATION directory is
   NOT required to be present during installation of the DECmcc
   Translan Access Module.

    I forgot to tell you to *re-enroll* all of the pieces of DECmcc, too.
    Sorry. That's why you had that huge failure when you rebuilt your
    dispatch tables last time. (control, registration and all those other
    neat things were conspicuously absent) Sorry.

    I'm 99.9% certain that this is NOT an error on the TRANSLAN AM's part.
    Your dispatch tables were not updated properly after you installed the
    AM and I have no idea how your system has gotten to the point that
    it's at now...

    Before we call it a total loss, let's give it one more go:

    Do a set ho/log and try these things then post the log here:

	$ @SYS$STARTUP:MCC_STARTUP_DIR.COM ENROLL !note the ENROLL parameter...

| 1293.12 | investigation coming along | TOOK::CALLANDER | Jill Callander DTN 226-5316 | Mon Aug 26 1991 14:26 | 9 |
| I am sure Doug will be back to you shortly on this. He and I did
    some investigation into this, and it looks like potentially something
    in the vector file for the AM might be amiss. He is going to get
    in touch with Vitalink and verify a few things. If you need an
    up to the minute update please drop him a quick call or mail; otherwise
    I am sure he will respond shortly.

| 1293.13 | BUG in AM.Film at 11:00 | TOOK::MCPHERSON | i'm only 5 foot one... | Mon Aug 26 1991 15:26 | 20 |
| Well, since I've been poked, I'll let you know:
There seems to be an annoying little bug with the last release of the Translan
AM. You _won't_ see the bug exceot under the following conditions:
        a) It's the 1st-time ever installation of the V1.0 TRANSLAN AM on your
           system
        b) You've upgraded from the EFT version *BUT* also subsequently deleted
           and rebuilt your dispatch tables.
If you have upgraded from the EFT version and *not* rebuilt your dispatch
tables, then you will not see the bug. It's still there, you just won't see it.
To minimize the spread of confusion, I removed W:RE protection on the
distribution directory until I can get a *fixed* AM in there.
Thanks in advance for your patience, and stay tuned.
/doug

| 1293.14 | See 3.104 for pointer to *fixed* MCC_TRANSLAN_AM.EXE | MCDOUG::MCPHERSON | i'm only 5 foot one... | Thu Aug 29 1991 11:39 | 6 |
| If you've already installed V1.0 of the AM,just replace the executable. Otherwise, install the whole (fixed) kit. regards, doug | |||||
