I have a customer that would like to use DECmcc to manage his Ethernet
network. He would like to know if he has to dedicate a Bridge on each
segement to collect Ethernet statistics or can he continue to use his
bridges (LB 100, LB 150 and LB 200s) to provide statistics and bridge
functions. I assume that the LB 200 should be able to both functions.
What statistics, data will he not get with DECmcc that he would get
with LTM and dedicated LB 150s.

Hi,
Can't answer all your questions but here's a start.
The LB100 (Rev E I think) and LB150 can run LTM. The 200 can't for
some reason.
When a bridge is running LTM it cannot act as a bridge. It is
either a bridge or an LTM station.
I'll leave MCCs influence on all this to the MCC people.

RE: LB100/LB150/LB200 and LTM ----------------------------- LB100s and LB150s can run the LTM-Listener microcode, which converts them from Bridges to Monitors. Since LB100 and LB150 use basically the same hardware, the downline-loadable image was made to work on both. There is no such downline-loadable image for LB200s. RE: LB200 as a Bridge+Monitor ----------------------------- The LB200 provides byte counters, etc, which allow the Performance FM to calculate Network Utilization (among other things). What one GAINS by having a LB200 (as opposed to a dedicated LB150 monitor) is a combination of Bridging and some monitoring. What one LOSES in not using the dedicated LB150 is the breakdown of Utilization by Protocol Type/Address/etc and stuff like TOP n TALKERS. Does this help? Chris | |||||
