Generally, this means that the management module is not enrolled. i.e. There is
no entry in MCC's dispatch tables which matches the VEA combination you have
entered.

| 690.3 | to enroll MMs that come with the DECmcc kits | TOOK::KOHLS | Ruth Kohls | Wed Feb 06 1991 13:11 | 22 |
| | .1 is right. If you are getting that for EVERY FM or AM command, then try:
	$manage/enterprize
	...
	MCC>do mcc_common:mcc_enroll_dir.com
and then, if you have the bms kit,
	MCC>do mcc_common:mcc_enroll_bms.com
However, since you didn't say the IVP failed, you may need to reset the
file protections or access rights before doing anything else.
I tried to create a Domain this morning without knowing the form for its name.
Try putting a period in front of the domain name, and put one in front of
other fullnames as well. Just a suggestion. (I've done less looking
through the documentation than you seem to have done.)
I see a lot of effort going into v1.1 of the documentation wrt DNS and MCC,
and I expect (hope) the result will be worth all that effort. Perhaps the
kit announcement for the v1.1 30-day ship kit will have more documentation
pointers.

| 690.4 | creat domain name (no dot is fine) | GOSTE::CALLANDER |  | Wed Feb 06 1991 15:22 | 9 |
| | you can simply create the domain using

    	create domain name
    		     ^no dot

    the dot isn't necessary because the domain entity can only be referred
    to by a fullname. The nameserver information will be automagically
    prepended as needed by MCC.

| 690.5 | DNS$SHARE problems | ZPOVC::ANDREWWAITES | Singapore - Asia's Wellington | Wed Feb 06 1991 20:28 | 22 |
|  |     I just KNEW I'd be apologising...

    	I suspect the IVP did fail because I reran it last night after
    posting the note and it failed. It looks like the problem was as you
    mentioned (.1 I think). I seem to be having trouble with DNS$SHARE not
    being installed (DNS is definitely started allthough the MCC node is a
    client. The server is available.) Anyway I forcibly INSTALLed DNS$SHARE
    and then reinstalled MCC and it passed its IVP and I could:

    	MCC> show mcc 0 all char

    	Without error. I had to leave about then so I'll start trying the
    niceties now.

    	As for the correct names, thanks for the hints and document (Marc).
    I guess I can roll back if I do something wrong so long as I don't mind
    re-entering things.

    thanks again,
    Andrew Waites

    p.s. Does anyone know why DNS$SHARE isn't getting installed?

| 690.7 | More Sadness... | ZPOVC::ANDREWWAITES | Singapore - Asia's Wellington | Thu Feb 07 1991 21:04 | 31 |
|  |     re .-1

    	DNS$CLIENT_STARTUP.COM does not install DNS$SHARE.

    	DNS$CLERK_STARTUP does... it doesn't get called.

    	Yesterday my configuration was using a remote server (I thought)
    but maybe my node was a server as well and all was getting confused so
    I shut DNS down on the remote server. Removed DNS from my node and
    reinstalled it locally as a totally virginal namespace. It then started
    fine but still no DNS$SHARE. It looks like the original
    DNS$CLIENT_STARTUP (supplied with VMS) calls the CLERK_STARTUP but the
    one provided with DNS does not.

    	Even if I force DNS$SHARE to be installed it only gets a little
    further. Every time I try to run CMM_CREATE_MCC_GES.COM to register the
    MCC it fails with a DNS communication error and after this DNS can't
    see a thing.

    	I am royally sick of this. All I want is a bloody map!!!! Nothing
    works and its all my fault, I'm trying to install without DNS
    documentation because that brilliant leading edge product doesn't ship
    documentation on CD, I've got a few other things to do and a customer
    that believes ISOVIEW is a wonderful network management product. I will
    look in the DNS conference for pointers about what the hell is
    happenning.

    	Sorry, just dummy spitting - managed 35' that time.

    regards,
    Andrew Waites

| 690.8 | All better.. | ZPOVC::ANDREWWAITES | Singapore - Asia's Wellington | Fri Feb 08 1991 02:43 | 18 |
| | A calmer, quieter, more relaxed Andrew speaks,...

    	I found lots of usefull info in the DNS conference (415.1 off
    memory) about what nasty things happen to DNS after you try
    deinstalling rambo style. It seems that you have to make sure you leave
    a few images around if your VMS is post 5.3 (as was mine).

    	The above helped somewhat.

    	I then found that not only do you have to run MCC_DNS_SETUP.COM but
    you also have to run MCC_DNS_BASIC_SETUP.COM as life is not good
    without the MCC_UID directory.

    	Anyway, with the above I now have a pretty map and can discover
    lots of wonderful things. Looks pretty sexy too.

    thanks for all the help,
    ANdrew
