    Ron,

I need some more information to assist you. What version of Digital UNIX
are you installing? Are you performing a new installation, or is it an
upgrade from a previous version? At what point do you get the kernel build
errors? Is it the first time that the kernel is built during the
    installation
process? Or are you installing some additional subsets and then rebuilding
the kernel? If you are performing an upgrade, the upgrade procedure will
sometimes indicate that you need to delete certain subsets prior to
    performing
the upgrade, and then reinstall them after the upgrade is completed. If this
is the case, did you follow this process? Does the system have any patches
installed, either before an upgrade or after the installation?

There are a number of things that could cause a kernel build to fail. I have
experienced problems under the following circumstances:

    - installing a subset that is not compatible with the version of the operating
      system installed.
    - installing a patch that is not compatible with the version of the operating
      system.

In both of these cases, backing off the offending subset or patch should get
you back to a state where the kernel can be built successfully.

Please send me the above info and I'll try to help you resolve this problem.
Since this is actually an installation question, as opposed to a
porting/development question, I'd also recommend that you call our customer
support services at 1-800-354-9000. They may have additional
recommendations on how to solve this problem.

Karen, this is an initial installation, after the software installs it
comes to the kernel configuration and I say configure for all and let
    it
go and it errors out to the information that I passed to you earlier.
What I am trying to install is V3.2C and then upgrade to V3.2D-1 but I
am running into this problem. If there is anything else I can answer
please let me know. And also irt your suggestion to contact support we
went through this merry-go-round this morning and they will not help us
because they say that we do not have software support for the machine,
even though the machine was given to us by DEC for software development
and someone at DEC is looking into why we cannot go through normal
channels for support on this matter.

    Ron,

Please try this and let me know if it helps:

When the kernel is being built, and it asks you which options you want
to build into the kernel, select "None of the above".

Try this as a first step. If it helps, and there are some kernel options
that you really need, then try rebuilding the kernel with only the specific
    options that you need.

If this suggestion doesn't help, then please send me a listing of all of
the subsets installed on the system, using the following command:

    setld -i

My next recommendation will be to try to determine which subset contains
code that is causing the undefined symbols when rebuilding the kernel. If
we can determine that, then backing off a particular subset may be useful to
    resolve the problem.

Mark, I went through the bios utility and changed the config to DecUnix,
and during the installation the systems recognizes all the disk drives
and peripherals. Why would I need to run that utility if I am not having
    any problems?

    Ron,

It greatly matters if you have previously been running Windows NT on
    the
machine. To switch from NT to UNIX, you need to

    1. shutdown NT,
    2. using the ARC console menu select the following:
            Supplementary menu
            Setup system
Switch to OpenVMS or DEC OSF/1
    3. power down the machine for a few seconds, then power on
    4. after system comes up in SRM console, you will see >>> prompt
    5. boot ECU diskette for OpenVMS or DEC OSF/1. There is a separate ECU
            floppy for Windows NT.
    6. configure EISA devices
    7. follow Installation Guide steps for DIGITAL UNIX. Do you have this
    book?

Mark, thank you for the information as well as Karen's help. So far I am
still in the same state as yesterday but I have tried a couple of
things:
1. I performed a clean install of 3.2c and the kernel build still failed
at the end of the installation. I let the system boot up and tried a
doconfig and select none of the above and that failed also.
2. I am now trying what Mark recommended. I found the ECU diskette for
DEC OSF and am now trying to find the documentation so I can try and
boot off this diskette.
That is where I am now. As son as I figure out how to run this EISA
config for Unix I will attempt another installation and let you know how
it goes. Thanks again for the input so far.

Mark, I just wanted to let you know that I ran the ECU configuration,
didn't change anything and saved the information and tried a kernel
build and it seems to be working now. I am doing a clean installation
now but that appeared to be the problem. Can you explain the
significance of running that diskette if I don't have any changes to
make? Once again I want to thank you for your assistance. Send a thank
you along to Karan as well.
