620.0. "Adding uninit'ed volume to a shadow set" by CSC32::J_STOKES (SummaNulla(The High Point of Nothing)) Tue May 20 1997 13:28
A customer running OpenVMS AXP V6.2 with tha ALPSHAD05_062 patch kit applied
attempted to add a third member to an existing two member shadow set (Phase II).
The third member is an un-initialized volume. The process appears to have hung
but is indeed getting some CPU and Direct I/O. There is an article in STARS
discussing this issue, apparently, the home-block search algorithm has been
modified with V6.2 and causes the addition of a shadow member (un-initialized)
to take a tremendously long time. Has this been resolved with an ECO more recent
than ALPSHAD05_062? My research does not indicate it having been fixed.

Why not just initialize the volume before adding it?
