| | :Why Alpha does not support Files-11 On-Disk Structure Level 1?
Likely a tradeoff was made versus various other competing engineering
projects, and ODS-1 support apparently lost.

I'd look at other options for floppy formats -- tar and PC floppy formats
are likely available under RSX, they are definitely available under
OpenVMS Alpha. The RT-11 format is supported by the OpenVMS EXCHANGE
utility. Alternatively, keep an OpenVMS VAX in a VMScluster. DOS-11
magtapes, and DECnet/kermit/NFS/FTP/etc network transfers, are other
   possible options.

| | There's also a utility that's been around for AGES called "getrsx"
which can read directories or extract files off ODS-1
structures. It was on the 1987 L&T SIG tapes from DECUS for
example, and I know I have a copy somewhere around. This would
make far more sense than needing a full ACP for ODS-1. I imagine
it doesn't matter THAT much they can't write them...so long as
they get one of the tar utils or the like to read the floppies
on his pdp11. There is also an ods-2-reader.c utility on the sigtapes
that can read ods-2 file structures on something else. One could
use that on RSX to read disks created in ODS-2 format.

Alternatively both FLX on pdp11 and EXCHANGE on VMS know RT11 format
and maybe dos-11 format. Also the old LZD/LZC apps that can preserve
file attributes can be built on RSX; I did so some years back.
You just force 12 but compress tables. The VMS FILE utility from
Joe Meadows and the old RSX utility ATT will both let you set
file attributes simply. Different syntax but same power and
utility. I believe ATT was republished on the Fall 1987 RSX SIG tapes
since it was originally written in 1979 or thereabouts. I forget the
original author, but this was one of the "must have" tools for RSX.

I might mention that Bob Supnik has written some pdp11 emulators
that may work on Alpha. I don't know however whether they can be
pointed at the RX26 disks to let them write such natively, and
an RSX version that's pretty old (4.2 or so ?) would be needed to
meet with Mentec's OK for dist'n. Meanwhile the getrsx.c and
    ods-2-reader.c (formerly getvms.c) are free.

| | Thank you very much for your reply.
I will try to do it using RT-11 format with my PDP-11(MicroRSX V4.3)
    and AlphaStation.
Re:.2
    How can I get "getrsx.c" and "ods-2-reader.c"?
Thank you very much and best regards,
