| That's all I remember. It's either a variant of COBOL, or it was an
old implementation of the COBOL - I think it's the latter.

Dibol is a programming language, and it is available on OpenVMS Alpha.
To locate a notes conference, use a command such as:
$ sear humane::sys$public:easynotes.lis dibol
DIBOL COMICS::DIBOL 1064
And see the following notes -- particularly note 400:

| Thanks for the COMICS::DIBOL pointer. It is not available on Alpha. I
am not sure what to tell the ISV with over 200 customers of theirs. He
says he has to move away from VMS now.

programming, it most resembles FORTRAN-66 with record
structures.
Other than that, I've forgotten everything else
I knew about it.

| The DBL is provided by Synergy a separate company. The customer had
contacted them, but they apparently ask for a lot of money. You should
realize that this ISV does not even have an internet account/email.
They transfer files using kermit. They seem to be in a bit of crunch.

Why doesn't that surpise me:)
DIBOL was officially retired in 1994. There was an official retirement
letter that went out to DIBOL customers that same year. Mail me if you
would like a copy. We still get calls on it - because of the money
thing - Customers are, you know, used to getting things free from
Digital. We are getting better at changing that learned behavior
though. If the customer is in a crunch, then they either need to pay
SYNERGY what they are asking or switch to another language through
Digital.

Since the ISV is (presumably) the owner of the software there shouldn't
be legal problems doing that. On the other hand they would need to
investigate closely what they can do with the RTL (which may well be
owned by Digital unless we made it public domain when we dumped the
product).

There is an RTL for VESTed DIBOL programs distributed with Alpha VMS:
