| 471.2 | it's O'VMS 7.1 | CRVETE::LENTZ | Peggy Lentz | Mon Jun 02 1997 07:44 | 8 |
| | That's right SLS is NOT running and it cannot because it's O'VMS 7.1.
    In fact, in desparation, I did try to start SLS (who knows, miracles
    can happen) and got an ident mismatch error message.

    So the question still stands, how do I get out of this apparent Catch
    22?

| 471.3 | What is the SLS version? | COOKIE::HEISLER | Chris Heisler, ABS Engineering | Mon Jun 02 1997 08:06 | 7 |
|  |     Peggy,

    	What is the exact version of SLS that is running? Do a
    	storage show version on the V6.2 system to find out. We have
    	MDMS V2.8-E02 running on a V7.1 system here.

| 471.4 | MDMS only can be used | COOKIE::HEISLER | Chris Heisler, ABS Engineering | Mon Jun 02 1997 09:23 | 15 |
|  |     Peggy,

    	You cannot run full SLS on V7.1. You can only have MDMS
    	installed there. You can pull a copy of an MDMS that will
    	install on V7.1 from this directory:

    	COOKIE::AIM$PUBLIC:[ARCHIVE_BACKUP.KITS.ABSOMT_SSB]

    	There are MDMS kits and an eco which applies to MDMS or
    	SLS (SLSE02028.A). The MDMS kits are called MDMSOMT028.%.

    	Delete the SLS that you have installed on the V7.1 system,
    	then install these kits. This should work for you.

| 471.5 | Any way to start just MDMS from SLS install? | CRVETE::LENTZ | Peggy Lentz | Mon Jun 02 1997 13:07 | 19 |

    Ouch!! The customer is running the 6.2-1H3 machine in production and it
    is running SLS from the 7.1 system disk. I thought installing SLS caused
    MDMS to install. Is there any way to start just MDMS on my 7.1 machine
    from the SLS installation on the 7.1 system disk?

    >>  . . . an eco which applies to MDMS . . .
    My guess is the eco is important or you wouldn't have mentioned it --
    what does it fix?

    Thanks,

    Peggy

| 471.6 | SLS version is V2.8A | CRVETE::LENTZ | Peggy Lentz | Mon Jun 02 1997 13:12 | 6 |
|  |     Chris,

    I read .3 and .4 out of order. Anyhow the SLS version is V2.8A based
    on the storage show version.

| 471.7 | No easy way | COOKIE::HEISLER | Chris Heisler, ABS Engineering | Mon Jun 02 1997 13:22 | 15 |
|  |     Peggy,

    	No, there isn't anyway to just start MDMS from a full SLS
    	installation. You'll probably have to move the SLS installation
    	to a disk on the V6.2 system. Then you can delete the SLS
    	on the V7.1 disk and install just MDMS over there.

    	Have you been running from that V7.1 disk for a long time,
    	or did you just start it up when you installed V2.8A there?

    	I wish I could give you some easy way to do this, but I don't
    	know of an easy way. V2.9 will support V7.1, but that is
    	still in field test.

    	Chris

| 471.8 | ECO | COOKIE::HEISLER | Chris Heisler, ABS Engineering | Mon Jun 02 1997 13:25 | 14 |
|  |     Peggy,

    	The ECO is what brings it to V2.8A. There is an article in
    	TIMA (STARS) about the eco, if you want to read what it fixes.
    	Look for the title:

    *SLS] SLSE02028 Storage Library System for OpenVMS V2.8 ECO Summary

    	Oh, also, MDMS is a subset of SLS, but there is a lot more put
    	out there with SLS. When it is a full installation of SLS,
    	you are starting SLS with SLS$STARTUP. If it is only MDMS, then
    	it is starting SLS.

    	Chris
