A good decision, I feel. Athers appeared to be coming into form at the end of
the NZ tour. He probably (just) deserves his place on form, but changing the
captain may well be bad for morale.
Not that I think Atherton is a good captain, competent is the word I'd use
to describe him.
However, my paper goes on to say that Athers will lose his place on the
selection committee. In the past he has had a deal of difficulty
using/motivating players he doesn't want on the team so if this is still the
case it may be an England IX vs an Australia XI. Given that England would
probably need at least fourteen fit players to beat Australia anyway, I think
this could reduce any (slim) chance of wining the Ashes, to zero.

| I also saw on the news here in Oz that Athers was goading the Oz team
with some smart-arse comments but I think it was more tongue-in-cheek
as he was seeming to think they may win the Ashes.......good one
Athers!!
The Oz team is picked today but I don't think it matters who goes, we
could pick a Bondi XI and still give the poms a floggin' :^)
Taylor will be captain and the Waugh boys plus Warne, McGrath,
Gillespie as the bowlers plus Blewett, Bevan as batsmen and Healy as
the 'keeper, so this leaves places for another two bowlers and 4
batsmen.
I'm hoping Slater goes but expect Elliot to be the opener. It will be
disappointiong if Hatden goes as I don't think he is a test batsmen,
great in Shield cricket but not up to test standard.
Another option Oz can do is for Gilchrist to go as a batsman and be
backup 'keeper for Healy. Gilchrist is a great bat and doesn't muck
around getting his runs.

| Well,
Crim got his wish and Slater is packing his bags for England and so is
Ricky Ponting, Hayden has been left out and so to some surprise has
Reiffel (too many injuries) Taylor is still captain but Healy is no
longer vice captain and has been replaced by Steve Waugh. This is a bit
of planning for the future though Healy is disappointed. Gilchrist is
also on the plane. Amazingly there is only two spinners on the plane
in Warne and Bevan.
The preliminary matches will be interesting however as there are now
three openers on the team in Taylor Slater and elliot with Ricky
Ponting fighting for the no3 slot who is going to win out, early form
will be critical.

| Mike,
If you knew the selectors read this notes conference you wouldn't have
been surprised by the selections.
They have obviously read all my old notes and realised I'm the only one
who really watches the games and can tell when someone is in or out of
form.
Ergo, lets just go with CRIMs selections and get down the pub before
closing time lads......
I think that Tayls will develop a mystery illness on tour and have to
hand the captaincy over to Steve Waugh which is great but I feel for
Healy as he would be captain at any other time in history and would
definitely have been a better captain than that cry baby Hughes who
disgraced the position which is held in such high regard.
