As far as I know, the TL8x0 can be attached to a system using more
than 1 bus, but we can not configure the TL in a SCSI cluster (NSR doesn't
support the tape and changer devices on a shared bus).
My question is about a heterogeneous environment, not cluster, so not
shared bus.
Something like this:
-------
| TL8xx |
| |
------ ------- --------
|HP | | | | |DEC Unix|
|Unix | | | +--------------------|system |
|system|-------------|-+ --------
------ |
|
|
-------
| DEC |
| WNT |
------
where each system can use the DLT tapes independently,
Maybe one of the system can centralise the dialog to the TL8xx for
mounting, labeling the tape, and then, after that, each system will use its bus
direct to the tape, to do the backup.
- Is this configurable at this moment? With SLS, NSR,....?
- If not, is Digital going to have any solution to this in the next
future?

hmmm, sounds like you may have cross posted this, no? We don't address SLS or general DIGITAL questions here. You could go ask the MRU people if they ever think they'll do something like that (see COOKIE::MRU). You can't do this with NetWorker and Digital UNIX/NT. | |||||

NetWorker does not support sharing a jukebox between systems. A NetWorker server assumes it has complete control and knowledge of the state of a jukebox and its contents. Even if you could have the Digital UNIX machine execute jukebox commands on behalf of the HP system, each system would know about only its own backup tapes. NetWorker would then get extremely confused about what is in the jukebox and you would be in grave danger of overwriting backup tapes. We understand the desire to do this, but the capability is not available. Wes | |||||

There is one very hard problem that crops up when attaching TL family libraries to multiple hosts. Since NSR doesn't support the configuration, I won't bother going into detail here, but if you ask in the COOKIE::MRU conference, I'll go on (and on and on probably) at length. There are also a couple of medium problems or show-stoppers depending on how you look at it. | |||||

Also, to clarify: The Digital UNIX operating system does not support any tape devices being on a shared SCSI bus. It is not specific to NetWorker. And we are actively working on it with the OS folks. Kevin | |||||
