Conference isvhub::netnotes

Node not running DECNET and TCP/IP, or not running NOTES V2.5+?

Might have to add a router node to those entries.

However, I'm not sure that even a router will help the V2.5 problem.

    To clarify (and correct):
    
    I am running NetNotes Client for MS Win32 v1.0.9 installed
    today.  I was successfully able to copy the contents of my 
    notes$notebook.note to my local NetNotes notebook, and I now wish 
    to access these conferences via NetNotes' local notebook and 
    client software.  My network transport is TCP/IP (conference@node).
    
    Is the node name suppose to be parsed by my DNS Server?  Is there a 
    limitation on what conferences are available?  Any suggestions?

    (oh, and the correction...  The error is:
    
    		"Connection to NODE failed. Remote Node is unknown")

    Assuming you're not using a route-through host in your setup, you
    need to either specify the entire domain for each IP node you're
    accessing (e.g. humane.mro.dec.com instead of humane::) or else add
    each of these names to your hosts file, such as
    
    	16.34.208.85	humane
    
    You can also add the most popular domains to your DNS search list in
    the TCPIP portion of network setup in control panel (e.g. add
    zko.dec.com, lkg.dec.com, mro.dec.com, etc.) and hope there aren't
    duplicate host names in different domains.
    
    It's simplest to use a route-through node if you've got one
    available. Not all conferences are available using TCP/IP. Specify
    the IP name of a VMS node both Notes 2.5 and UCX in the "route
    through node" box of your setup.

    Thanks, Paul.  I had assumed that humane (which is really an alias for
    humane.mro.dec.com, isn't it?) would be translated by either of the two
    DNS servers I have defined in TCP/IP and connect seamlessly to the
    target conference.  Obviously I was wrong!  :-(
    
    I've substituted the full ip name (humane.mro.dec.com, for example) and 
    this works, but I hate the idea of changing this info for each and
    every conference entry I have.
    
    I've located my local HOSTS file -- \WINDOWS\HOSTS.SAM and modified it 
    to include your example (much the same as \etc\hosts under unix,
    right?) but this didn't work for me.  Does .SAM indicate it is a sample 
    file?  Should it have another extension?
    
    If I have to, I will use a route-through host provided I can get it to
    work (it's not working for me right now -- I get "Error sending or
    reading message from remote server.  Conference is no longer open."
    message.  This is the same error as I had earlier when I was trying to
    copy my notebook contents locally; miraculously it began working after
    I logged out of my VMS accout (?) but no such luck here now.

.SAM does indeed stand for "sample".  You need to rename it
to just "hosts" (with no extension).

Since there could be a humane.zko.dec.com or a humane.shr.dec.com, just 
supplying the "simple name" (host name sans domain) doesn't work; the first 
match might not be the right one (and if there's only one match in your local 
DNS server, that doesn't mean there isn't another match out there that this 
name server simply doesn't have in its datastore).

    I was assuming that most hosts -within Digital- had a "simple name" 
    that was unique, most likely the same as their DECnet node name.  I,
    of course, neglected to consider the possibility of TCP/IP only
    systems.  Another assumption made was that the "simple name" would 
    be registered within our DNS server's host list -- obviously a mistake.
    
    Ok, I got my hosts list working (thanks Hal).  So now, any ideas how 
    I discover the IP name and/or address for those conferences which my
    local name server apparently does not know about?

Assumption: you've got the notebook transferred to your PC (i.e. you're using a 
local notebook in NetNotes) and are trying to use a route through node.

In NetNotes customize...setup make sure you've got "route through node" 
checked. In the box make sure you name a VMS node (using its IP address) that 
is running DECnet, UCX, and Notes 2.5.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to be more specific about how your NetNotes 
is set up, how you've specified your routethrough node, and what error you're 
seeing on what conference. "I'm still getting errors" isn't a whole lot to go 
on...

Also, if your notebook won't convert from VMS, add the router in 
front of the notebook filespec:

router::node::disk:[directory]notes$notebook.note

I am having a similar problem with some of my entries.

I'm running on at Windows95 system and routing through a VMS system 
(ROKKON).

I am trying to get to JUMP4::EATS

Unfortunately my local database thinks that JUMP4 is 56.317, but 
ANCHOR thinks that it is 25.415.

When using notes on VMS, I could put in the translated address, i.e. 
26015 (=1024*25 + 415) and open the notes file. This doesn't seem to 
work with NetNotes.

I've tried as many of the "quoted" node names as mentioned in note 55 
without any luck, i.e. "26015", anchor::"26015::", anchor::"jump4::"

I've got a bunch conferences where the local database is not correct.

Has anyone found a reliable workaround that works with NetNotes when 
you are using the route thru approach?

26015::eats works for me, accessing through a router.

    Nope, it's the copy I can't manage. I'm sure something needs to be done
    on the VMS machine, but I have no idea what. I can use a local
    notebook, and I can access conferences on the node from which I want to
    copy my notebook.

    Sounds like you forgot to set the ACL on your notebook file on the

    ... and either your PC is running DECnet or your VAX is running both
    UCX and Notes 2.5+ ...?  43626:: appears to be vaxcat::, which
    appears to be at location SBP but I didn't find a reference to
    vaxcat.sbp.dec.com (another domain perhaps or alternate name?)...

    VAXCAT is now in REO and so is now vaxcat.reo.dec.com, and my laptop is
    not running DECNET in any way, shape or form. I'm using IP through RAS.

Well it appears that the problem I had when I switched to the decnet 
number was not related to that at all.

In the node entry name I had put:

EATS (jump4::)

Somehow that kept me from opening the file and give me the error
        Remote node is unknown
If I remove the parenthesis, I get a file format error. If I change 
the entry name to:

EATS-jump4

There is no problem.

And all of this without either changed the node or filename.

Quite wierd!

    There is also the possibility that the notes server is not enabled in
    UCX.

    If it show notes being disabled, call you system manager and ask
    her/him to enable it.
