| 2380.1 | How much memory? | SNLV01::LEE |  | Wed Apr 23 1997 16:46 | 4 |
| | As it comes with 16MB of memory, I'm surprised. How many applications
are you running when it runs slow?

| | For now I am really running nothing more than one or no applications.
I have more memory on order. The slowness appears to be in the screen
paint times. Simply opening Explorer or other windows is very slow.
You can almost seen the graphics painted on the screen.

Hopefully my memory upgrade will ship soon.

you might have activated it accidentally.

| | My VP535 doesn't have such an option, but the VP500 series does have an
automatic circuit that slows down the system when it gets too hot. Early
models had a lot of trouble with that, later ones seem to do better.

| | My 575 does not appear to have such an option.

One example of the "slow display" is as follows...

I have the Microsoft Office Shortcut bar located at the top of the
screen and set to "autohide". When it is hidden and I move the cursor
to the top of the screen the outline of the bar appears and you can
watch the icon boxes paint slowly from left to right

| 2380.8 |  | WHYNOW::NEWMAN | Protector of the Cause | Thu Apr 24 1997 11:42 | 8 |
| | Performance says "Configured for optimal performance". System
resources 71% free. Virtual memory set to let Windows manage it. I
assume that "Find Fast" is running since it is in the StartUp folder.

Basically the system is running the "default" options that are set
after installing software. It does appear as if there is a lot of disk
activity (the LCD disk indicator is on or blinking much of the time)
when the system is just "idle"

| | Try killing off FindFast. I routinely create a folder called
"Startup Holding Tank" that I can drag stuff from my Startup folder
into on a temporary-to-permanent basis without losing their
    properties.

FindFast is really just a synonym for WeighDown. I've yet to see it
actually help me find anything when I did enable it.

| | Killing off FastFind and some other things in the StartUp folder made
no difference. I will try connecting it to a monitor to see if it is
just the nature of the LCD display.

BTW - What I am comparing the "performance" to is my HiNote Ultra CT475

| 2380.12 | It has gotten a little better... | WHYNOW::NEWMAN | Protector of the Cause | Fri Apr 25 1997 17:20 | 32 |
| | Well, I have played around with the system some more and here is what I
    have learned...

In addition to the VP 575 I also have a Celebris GL 6200 on my desk.
Both systems have essentially the same software loaded on them,
    including Norton Utilities.

According to the CPU monitor in Norton Utilities on the GL 6200, when
the system is "just sitting there", the CPU Used percentage is
somewhere between 1% and 5%. There is also not much, if any, disk
activity indicated by the led on the front of the machine.

According to the CPU monitor in Norton Utilities on the VP 575, when
the system is "just sitting there", the CPU Used percentage was pegged
at 100%. There was also MUCH disk activity according to the LCD disk
indicator either blinking or on steady.

I then removed many of the programs that are started up when the system
is booted (keep in mind that these programs are also running on the GL
    6200).

After rebooting, the VP 575 is now showing a CPU Used percentage of
about a constant 40% when the system is "just sitting there". Also,
the disk indicator is no longer on.

While system performance is now better on the VP 575 than it was, it is
still noticably sluggish. I also don't understand why some programs
have a performance impact on the VP 575 and apparently not on the GL
6200. Could it be the difference between the 166Mhz MMX processor on
the VP 575 and the Pentium Pro 200Mhz on the GL 6200?

| | And one more thing...

I just borrowed 16MB of memory to bring the total system memory up to
32MB. The system is still idling at approximately 40% CPU Utilization.

Are you comparing apples to apples with regard to hardware that's in
the VP575 vs the GL6200? Also, are you running the same O.S. on both?
Windows 95? Windows NT? I *hope* you're running NT on the 6200
otherwise, it would be such a waste of a Pentium Pro.

You need to track down what's taking up that 40% of the cpu... Perhaps
    it is your cpu monitor?

Back to the hardware involved. If you have IDE on one machine and SCSI
on the other, and there is any disk activity at all, you will be eating
cpu cycles on the IDE machine that won't be used on the SCSI machine.

| | re .14

Well, I powered up my VP 575 to get the list of programs that are
running as requested by .14 and it appears as if there is a problem.
Perhaps this is related to the apparent slowness of the system.

When I power up the system the boot process completes and the Win95
splash screen appears. Then I get the following error message

    	While initializing device IOS:
Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

Several attempts to restart the computer have not resulted in the
system booting correctly. It will, however, start up in SAFE MODE.

Any ideas? Or should I just rebuild the system from scratch? I am
almost tempted to rebuild the system from the media supplied with the
unit to see if I messed up something along the way that is creating the
performance problems I have been having.

Check out the NOTED::WINDOWS95 conference. A lot of problems seem to

necessary machine-specific drivers before you begin.

| 2380.18 | I have rebuilt from scratch and it is still busy | WHYNOW::NEWMAN | Protector of the Cause | Mon Apr 28 1997 10:31 | 23 |
| | Due to the fact that the system would not boot I have rebuilt the
system from the software installation CD's supplied with the system.
So far I have loaded Windows95, the supplied Device Drivers, and Norton
Utilities. The only thing running in Norton Utilities is the CPU
    Monitor.

Just as before, Norton Utilities is showing a steady 41% CPU
Utilization with the system "idle". As requested in .14, CTRL-ALT-DEL
    shows the following programs running:

    		Norton System Doctor
    		Explorer
    		Sysresrc
    		Cardagnt
    		Systray
    		Nprotect

Just for the heck of it, I deleted all programs (via the CTRL-ALT-DEL
window) other than Norton System Doctor and Explorer and it still
shows a constant 45% CPU Utilization.

I am puzzled... On other systems, Norton System Doctor takes only
1%-2% of an idle system to monitor the CPU activity.

I don't know why I did not think of this earlier but I ran the "System
Monitor" that is part of Windows95. I don't know if it is monitoring
the same thing but it is monitoring Kernel: Processor Usage. It is
showing a constant value of approximately 50%.

| | Just for chuckles, have you run a VIRUS scan.,...

I have several of the VP575 systems and no such problem exists here.

How many systems do you have ?
If this is a ONE-OF-A-KIND situation, it is possible that you have a
true hardware failure if it is not a virus..
THe system is running Windows 95 SR 2.1 as opposed to the Windows 95
SR0 that came out last year. Be sure that you used the Windows 95 CD
that came with your system and then the System Cd to install the
drivers. If you did not do that, you will have many different issues
that have never been explored or documented..

| | Well, I have finally completed rebuilding my system from the CD's that
came with it. Other than the fact that the CPU monitor still says that
the system is between 35%-40% busy when it is doing "nothing" the
performance is MUCH BETTER. It is running the same software as before
but it is now fast and the screen paints fast too.

The only remaining problem I have (and I had it before) is that I am
unable to get the docking station with NIC card working. This is low
priority, however, since I primarily use RoamAbout Wireless networking.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions.

I have seen this before. It looks like you might have installed a PC

Congratulations! You hit the Norton "Suck up the computer" bug!

I had to reinstall NU 2.0 for Win95 three times, and turn off a number
of features to get rid of the problems you describe. They are not that
unusual; there are a number of configuration and disk conditions that
seem to trigger this behaviour in NU System Monitor and Recycle Bin.

I called Symantec about, and got a very telling response. The first
tech I talked to said, "Yep, I know what's happening." He was about to
tell me how to fix it (by uninstalling NU2.0) when I got shuffled to
another tech, who told me essentially that it was a "feature". I pretty
much told him it wasn't acceptable behaviour, but he was not helpful in
finding a way to fix it.

Now, I keep very minimal System Monitoring enabled, Recycle Bin stuff
is completely disabled, and I use NU 2.0 for what I really wanted in
the first place - a decent disk repair tool.
