I live in Rochester N.Y. and have gone to the pageant a few times. The
pageant is well worth the trip.
   
You don't need tickets but bring a sweater, bug repellent and a blanket to
sit on. You may want to call ahead for motel/hotel reservations as the town 
seems to fill up the week of the pageant. If you cannot get reservations in 
Rochester try Syracuse it's just as close to the pageant.

    I agree with Carl that the Pageant is really worth the trip for members
    and non-members alike.  If you believe in the teachings of the Church
    it will be but another testimony for you, if not, it will give you
    food for thoughts and challenge you.
    
    Hotel reservations can be a bit difficult if you wait until the last
    minute, but not impossible.  There are also camp grounds not too far
    away, but you also need reservations for those ...as mormons do like
    this event.
    
    There is a big crowd, some seated on benches and others on the ground.
    There aren't any real "bad seats" as the pageant is played on the
    hill Cumorah, on a multi-level raised plaform.  It is very impressive.
    The sweaters are in order as it gets chilly in the evening , what
    I suggest as a blanket to sit on, is in fact a vinyl tablecloth you
    don't use much.  You sit on the flannel side and put the vinyl side on
    the ground, because it is very humid.
    
    Do not be surprised if yougo there, to see some people dressed to look
    like our missionnaries, giving out anti-mormon litterature as you try
    to cross the street from the parking area (public land) to the pageant
    area (Church- owned land ) -
    
    If you get there early enough before it starts, you will get to speak
    with the actors ...Nephi, Lehi etc etc etc ...and the lamanite
    warriors ...! (some of the actors are in duplicates, as some on the
    movements on the multi-level stage would be too slow to allow an actor
    to move from one scene to another quickly enough.  The sound effects
    are fabulous ...!

    re. anti-mormon literature
    
    I do remember these people passing out that stuff. The church does post
    missonaries in the parking lot to inform us non-members that the
    people passing out the papers are not related with the mormon church.
    
    I won't be able to attend this years pageant to collect any of this
    literature, so my question(s) are...
    
    1) who is passing this information out
    
    2) what does it say ( i can guess )
    
    3) what is their beef with your church 
    
    
    
    If you do attend there are a lot of other LDS historical sites close to
    the "hill" that you might be intrested in.

Much of that information is available from "christian" book stores and also
from many "christian" churches so you can read it without going to NY.  They
think Mormonism is a cult and anti-christ. By way of information to those
interested in this, there are several notes at the beginning of this conference
that discuss the charges of Mormonism being a cult.
