Interesting. In my King James Version of the Holy Bible, published
by the LDS church, this word "nephilim" is not there, but instead,
it says "giants". The footnotes cross-reference to: Gen. 14:5; Num.
13:33; Deut. 3:11; Moses 8:18.
The passage in Num 13:33 has a footnote to the word "giants" which says
"HEB nephilim.". Apparently this is the term found in the Hebrew
manuscripts. The translators of the RSV apparently chose to leave it
untranslated. It is interesting to note that the Book of Moses in the
Pearl of Great Price also refers to these giants.
Perhaps Nephi was given his name because he was to become a 'giant' of
a man?

For what it's worth, the KJV version is:
There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after
that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men,
and they bare children unto them, the same became mighty men
which were of old, men of renown.
As far as similar names go, my Smith's Bible Dictionary lists Nepheg
(meaning sprout - Ex. 6:21), Nephish (meaning refreshed - an
inaccurate version of Naphish, 1 Chron. 5:19), the children of
Nephishesim or Nephusim (meaning expansions - Neh. 7:52), and
Nephthalim (a form of Naphtali which means wrestling - Tob. 7:3,
Matt. 4:13, 15, Rev. 7:6).
