3148.0. "Another broken formatter!" by SWAM2::RHODEWALT_BR (Read. Reply. Repeat.) Sun Aug 15 1993 19:19
    During upgrade from V2.4 my formatter linked without errors but doesn't
    work. When we attempt to start it, using
    oa$build:OA$FORMATTER_START.COM OA$, we get the following errors:

        Starting OA$FORMATTER queue

       %OA-W-SNDJBC_OPERR, SEND_JBC operation error
       -JBC-E-SYMDEL, unexpected symbiont process termination

    When we run it interactively, we see the following:

       $RUN SYS$SYSTEM:OA$FORMATTER
       %JBC-E-SYMCREPRC, error creating symbiont process for

    Unfortunately, or fortunately, we have another machine (clustered, with
    separate system disks) running ALL-IN-1 on which the formatter works
    perfectly.

       Both systems: VMS A5.5-2, ALL-IN-1 3.0, MR3.1B

       DTR is linked on the system that works but not on the bad system.

    SYS$SYSTEM:OA$FORMATTER.EXE is unprotected and same size on both
    systems. (In fact, we can produce the errors above with an exact copy
    of the formatter from the working system.)

    I know this topic has been beaten to death here, but none of the
    situations is the same as mine. (I.e., we didn't just upgrade VMS, we
    don't have WordPerfect, SCSNODE is defined correctly, etc.)

    Any ideas?

| 3148.1 | SMBSRVSHR? | SAHQ::WOLFE | John Wolfe - (404)-924-6463 | Mon Aug 16 1993 13:52 | 4 |
|  |
	Is SMBSRVSHR defined? As I recall this needs to be defined on A5.5-n
	systems.
 |
| 3148.2 | Hmph! | SWAM2::RHODEWALT_BR | Read. Reply. Repeat. | Mon Aug 16 1993 17:02 | 12 |
| | Well, blow me down! That definition (pointing to SMBSRVSHR_OLD.EXE) is
    in place on the good system and missing on the bad one. That's a great
    hypothesis. I'll go give it a shot.

    Why is there an _OLD file in the first place? Where did it come from?
    Will it be deleted when we upgrade the queue manager? Anyone have any
    background on this? Anyone know why the help line attendants aren't
    aware of this?

    Thanks for your help.

| 3148.4 | New queue manager | IOSG::NEWLAND | Richard Newland, IOSG, REO2-G/L2 | Mon Aug 16 1993 17:22 | 6 |
| | The format of the VMS queue file changed for the new queue manager. There
are different versions of SMBSRVSHR for the old and new versions of the
queue manager and associated data files.
