| | John,

DO OA$LIB:SMNETINIT wipes the network file.

Then run UA to repopulate around the network.

| 2199.2 | SMNETINIT/SMNETUPDT | GLDOA::HOLBEL |  | Tue Feb 02 1993 22:24 | 14 |
| | I have learned something to this effect but have a couple more
    questions,

    1. What is the difference between SMNETINIT.SCP and SMNETUPDT.SCP?
And where does SMNETPRGE fit in?

    2. Is there anything I need to be aware of if I,
       - Create a new empty network.dat
       - Execute SMNETINIT or SMNETUPDT (which one?)
       - And then run UA.

    Thanks,

    John

| 2199.3 | As told to me by the Network Profile Developer | AIMTEC::WICKS_A | MUP(pets) coming to ALL-IN-1 soon? | Tue Feb 02 1993 22:51 | 37 |
| | John,

OK history lesson. In the beginning (before v2.3) there were 3 network
    profile scripts/ BASIC programs etc...

SMNETINIT (.SCP), SMNETUPDT (.SCP, .BAS) and SMNETPRGE (.BAS)

Along came v2.3 ... housekeeping with two procedures called UA and DA
UA is nothing more than SMETUPDT, DA is nothing more than SMNETPRGE
but poor old SMNETINIT was cast into the wilderness and not good enough
to gain it's "official housekeeping job" badge sulked in OA$LIB all
    but forgotten to the world.

    so to answer your questions

    1. SMNETINIT repopulates NETWORK with users from your local PROFILE
who have MNODE set to OA$Y in the PROFILE
SMNETUPDT (which is really UA in disguise) takes your local NETWORK
entries and propogates them to other nodes and brings in NETWORK
       entries from other nodes

so it follows that SMNETPRGE goes out and propogates deleted NETWORK
records to other nodes and brings in updates of deleted NETWORK
       records from other nodes.

    2. Yes
       <CREATE, SMNETINIT, UA

And lo at this stage does one turn to the good book (ALL-IN-1 Mail
Management guide) and read further collected knowledge as dictated
to a writer being by the mythical Network Profile Developer!

    Regards,

| | Minor correction to .-1

Neither SMNETUPDT nor SMNETPRGE propogate [sic] anything __TO__ other
nodes. It was a fundamental design rule when this stuff was produced
that one node should only ever _read_ stuff _from_ other nodes. These
two programs threfore only bring stuff (updates, deletes) _from_ other
    nodes.

    Dave.
