| | Michael,

The release notes of CDA Converto2 Library 2.0 specify which
version of CDA Base Services is required for which convertor.

I think 1.4 is the minimum for your customer.

CDA Base Services is normally part of DECwindows. This is the version list.

    DECW055 contains V1.3
    CDAPAT011 contains V1.4
    DECW$MOTIF010 contains V1.5
    DECW$MOTIF011 contains V1.6

So CDAPAT011 (which is part of the ALL-IN-1 V3.0 distribution)
    should do it.

    Regards,

| 2034.2 | Marketing position regarding CDA V2.0 and ALL-IN-1 | SIOG::T_REDMOND | Thoughts of an Idle Mind | Tue Jan 05 1993 13:03 | 63 |
| | Just FYI, this memo was sent out today from European Product Marketing.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    From: Shane O'Neill @ILO

A question we are frequently asked is why the latest version of the CDA
Converter Library (V2.0) is not bundled with ALL-IN-1. This appears to be
causing confusion in the field as customers/accounts are now implementing
ALL-IN-1 V3.0. Also, there appears to be a perception in the field that
ALL-IN-1 V3.0 customers are now entitled to this option free under their
ALL-IN-1 Service Contract. This is not the case.
Here is an explanation of the situation:
  General situation:
When a customer buys an ALL-IN-1 Licence, they acquire the right to use
the current version of ALL-IN-1. If they are under service contract
(SSS or SUSL in Europe) they maintain the right to use the new releases
or Updates to ALL-IN-1. Eventhough ALL-IN-1 contains several bundled
component products, customers do NOT maintain the right to Updates of
these components when they are not bundled with the licensed ALL-IN-1
  product.
  Specific ALL-IN-1 V3.0 situation:
When ALL-IN-1 V3.0 released in June 1992 the CDA Converter Library V1.1
was a bundled component product. This is explicitly referenced in the
ALL-IN-1 spd. Since then the CDA Converter Library has upgraded to V2.0
(October 1992). The time lag between ALL-IN-1 V3.0 release and CDA
Converter Library V2.0 has meant that ALL-IN-1 customers do not benefit
from the enhancements and additions to the recently announced Converter
  Library V2.0 product.

ALL-IN-1 customers who have an explicit CDA Converter Library
maintenance contract are entitled to the new CDA Converter Library V2,
and should have already received this via the normal update channel.
ALL-IN-1 customers who haven't an explicit CDA Converter Library
maintenance contract and require Version 2.0 of the Converter Library may
purchase an Update License at 55% MLP discount rates, via normal Digital
  business channels.
  Other considerations:
The CDA Converter Library V2.0 includes significant enhancements over
V1.1, including support for many popular PC and MAC formats. In addition,
the CDA Converter Library V2.0 bears royalty obligations to a third party.
If we Digital fail to comply with the above Licensing scheme, we are in
serious breach of Digital's business practices and subsequently our
  licensing agreement with third party.

  Revenue Opportunity:

Document interchange is a significant customer problem that Digital is
uniquely positioned to solve with CDA technology. This is of value to
customers (as evidenced by demand for V2 of the CDA Converter Library) and
represents a revenue opportunity for Digital. Digital's offering is very
priced competitively against third parties in this space e.g Keyword.
If anyone requires further information, don't hesitate to contact me.

  Regards,
  Shane

| 2034.3 | CD-dist. does not have CDA v1.1 | COPCLU::ELIN | Elin Christensen @DMO, DTN 857-2406 | Mon Mar 22 1993 14:33 | 15 |
| | Hi Tony

I understand your considerations, but how should we prevent customers
with CD-ROM updates from installing newest versions of CDA and other
    ALL-IN-1 bundled products?
If you want to install ALL-IN-1 from the latest CD distribution kit,
you will find CDACVTLIB020 and no earlier versions of CDA.

Should we then install brand new product versions at customer sites
with CD readers, and old versions when we do installations at sites
    with tape stations?
Shouldn't an ALL-IN-1 installation bought from Digital be the same
product no matter what media the customer has?

| | Elin,

this really is a question you should ask the Product Manager Dave Holt @REO
We too have been asked by customers when they might expect to receive
their CDA v2.0 tape particularly since it seems to be recommended as
a solution in the TeamLinks conference a lot. if there isn't going
to be a new ALL-IN-1 release soon then aren't we in danger of annoying
    our customers even more?

Is it reasonable to expect customers to await the PFR?

    Regards,

| 2034.6 | .2 is THE answer | COPCLU::ELIN | Elin Christensen @DMO, DTN 857-2406 | Fri Mar 26 1993 10:01 | 22 |
| | I have set note 2034.5 hidden.

I have been told - from Dave Holt and Gerry Lynch - that Shane's memo
in .2 is the valid answer, and that we cannot let customers run CDA
    v2.0 under their ALL-IN-1 v3.0 license.

I still see a problem because CD-dist customers in Denmark - and in other
European countries too - got ALL-IN-1 in their own language on CD
distribution from November 92 which was also the first CD distribution
    with CDA v2.0.

If it is not legal to install CDA v2.0, I think the ALL-IN-1 directory
on the CD-dist should contain the legal versions of bundled software, so
that our customers would not have to go back to the September distribution
in order to find a legal CDA version, and maybe to another distribution
kit to find a legal Notes version.
It also ought to be different license PAKs so that customers would not
be able to install product versions which they are not entitled to.

As it is now, things are too confusing.

| 2034.7 | ALL-IN-1 group said NO to include CDA v2.0 | COPCLU::ELIN | Elin Christensen @DMO, DTN 857-2406 | Fri Mar 26 1993 10:45 | 28 |
| | I have talked with Gerry Lynch on the phone.

I told him that CDA v1.1 is not bundled with ALL-IN-1 on the current CD
distribution (I cannot find it), only CDA v2.0 is available, and that
CDA v2.0 can easily be installed and run with the PAK from the ALL-IN-1
    kit.
From the CDA group's point of view, this is not at all acceptable, and
Gerry will take action on this point.

The CDA group has tried to sell CDA v2.0 to the ALL-IN-1 group for
inclusion in ALL-IN-1 v3.0, but the ALL-IN-1 group decided NOT to
    include CDA v2.0.
Below is what Gerry writes about this.
    Elin
<< Although there were syncronization issues with A1 V3 release, ( at least for
<< the English base version ) the A1 team made a consious decision NOT to
<< include CDA Conv Lib V2 in future releases of ALL-in-1. This was a business
<< decision. The CDA Conv Lib V2 has royalty obligations to a third party,
<< hence any product wishing to bundle it must conform to proper fiscal
<< procedure. As it stands right now All-in-1 V3 customers are not entitled
<< to free upgrade of CDA conv lib V2. I am more than willing to accommodate
<< a change to this position, should All-in-1 product management/development
<< decide to change their strategy. So if you wish to persue the bundling
<< dicsussion, you must work the issue with A1 product management.

| | >> but the ALL-IN-1 group decided NOT to include CDA v2.0.
I think I know enough about this to answer for the "ALL-IN-1 group" (of which
I am part).
We would very much like to use CDA V2.0 with ALL-IN-1. But as with all new
versions of products that interact with ALL-IN-1, it must be certified. We'd
look pretty dumb shipping it if we hadn't even tested it ourselves!
Unfortunately, senior management in Digital have seriously reduced the resources
available to the ALL-IN-1 group. So, at the present time, we are not
able to perform the necessary certification.
Thus we can't officially support CDA V2.0 with ALL-IN-1.

| | I think you'll find that the real sticking point is the royalty payment.
Ultimately, it is the answer to the question:
``How many ALL-IN-1 customers use CDA?''
which would (IMHO) have the biggest influence on any change by product
management.
Cheers,
    Paul.
