			*** Upgrade causes DDS grief !! ***

	Hi,

	Having succesfully linked DDS (MR V3.2) into ALL-IN-1 V2.3 a while ago,
	this same node had DDS errors after an upgrade to SSB v3.0.

	The errors were the infamous `you could not be authenticated in the Mail 
	Directory'.

	When I checked the log file of the upgrade I found the explanation.  I can't 
	beleieve this is supposed to happen but it did, so can anyone suggest why ?

	The log file showed that it deleted the following records from DDS;
	
	- Useragent record for Node OA$NODE$ALLIN1
	- Subscriber record for MANAGER

	It then showed NEW records being added for both the above.  As  this causes a 
	diffrent DDSID to appear on the useragent record, and as this is the proxy owner
	of all my existing ALL-IN-1 DDS subscribers, I think it is something to do with
 	this DDSID mismatch, that causes the error message to appear (all DDS subscriber
	entries appear to be untouched by the upgrade).  Does this explanation sound 
	correct?  anybody add anything else ?

	Given that this behaviour has occured and we have another 6 nodes/clusters to
	upgrade (all running V2.3 and one having 2500 subscriber records), if this happens
	what is the fix ?  

	What I did this time was;

	- Delete Useragent, Manager and all Subscriber entries using MBMAN
	- Run a script through PROFIL DSAB to set all user DDSID and MDFLAGS to ""
	- Deleted record from UAPASSWRD.DAT
	- Adopted DDS (again!!) as per mail management manual ie. build UA, Manager 
	  records and run USERAGENT_POST and MAIL_DIR_CONVERT scripts

	This seems to have fixed it but did I need to go to all this trouble ?  As you can
	imagine this will take several hours on the cluster with 2500 users.

	Hi John, As far as I can see the behaviour you describe can only happen if at the time you performed the upgrade the DDS field in A1CONFIG (A1BASE record) was set to zero. The installation uses the value it finds here to make the decision about the state of DDS on your system. The value of this field is used during startup to define OA$DDS_PRIME, so it is possible to have DDS successfully adopted but have this field set to zero as long as you have manually defined OA$DDS_PRIME, only after an ALL-IN-1 startup would you notice anything wrong. Before upgrading the other system check that the DDS field in A1CONFIG is set to the value of OA$DDS_PRIME. Cheers, Chris.

	John, Upgrades of ALL-IN-1 don't delete and readd DDS as my learned colleague said so something strange must have happened at this one site. Regards, Andrew.D.Wicks

	I have just experienced the same phenomenon while upgrading the White House from 2.3 to 3.0. MR 3.2 was installed about two weeks earlier. All accounts get the 'authorized' nasty-gram while entering EM or WP, i.e., during MAIL INIT. It's puzzling because the DDSID link still seems to work, i.e., PROFILE info still maps to DDS correctly. Could someone confirm that the fix in .0 is correct and the recommended one? CSC told the customer that they would have to delete and re-enter all their A1 DDS entries. They do NOT want to do this and I don't blame them , as we have spent many months getting things just right to support a number of mail interop packages. Thanks, Bob Spangler

	Bob, The DDSid link between PROFILE and DDS can't be working if you're getting "you could not be authorised" - as for the best fix well i'm assuming that Bill wants to use his system tomorrow so you don't have that many choices - there's the procedure in the Mail management Guide, the one in the base note and probably one in STARS too so it's really your choice. regards, Andrew.D.Wicks

	Bob, Ah now that i've managed to get into CHAMPS I see that I get a name check in the last-workunit of your call as in "will talk to Andrew to see if there is any other way when he comes in tomorrow" well i'm going to disappoint you and tell you not to hold your breath for a miracle solution - I always recommend the sections of the Mail management guide (but that's because I played a large part in writing them!) and the STARS article also looks ok. there are ways though of reconciling errant DDSids but they usually require some programming (which requires money) and nothing that could be done in the next couple of days - so rebuilding does the seem the best short term option as the CSC specialist I believe told you. 	Andrew: Thanks for your help on this. I think we'll just have to bite the bullet and do a rebuild. It's late and I've been here all weekend but I swear the DDSID's DO match and they still get the authentication error. That's life. In general, the upgrade went well considering all the customizations they've done (actually I've done about 95% of them). 3.0 seems like a fabulous product, and I'm anxious to work with it. Bob By the way I know you mean soccer at RFK, not football. And is that a real sport anyway? I mean, in Europe, there's usually more action in the stands than on the field.
