Note 11.1 ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports 1 of 2
DATABS::HEATH 54 lines 27-APR-1992 11:24
-< ALL-IN-1 Performance Reporter problems >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This note should be used to describe known problems specifically
for the ALL-IN-1 Performance reports. Questions and requests should
have their own base note. The purpose of this note is just to have a
single point to describe known problems and any work-arounds.
I've added a description of the product below.
The ALL-IN-1 Performance Report (A1R) Field test kit is now
available in DATABS::A1R$V10KIT. The documentation can be found
in DATABS::A1R$V10DOC. The Installation Guide and User's Guide
are rolled into the same document and is called A1REPORTS_UG. It
is available in postscript, ln03, text and bookreader formats.
When the product formally ships, in May, I'll replace the field test
kit with the SSB kit. The only difference at this point is the product
ident.
Product description:
ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports displays performance data collected
on ALL-IN-1's behalf and stored in an Rdb database by DECtrace
for VMS. The report engine in ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports is a
SmartStar application that reads the data from the Rdb database
and generates the reports. This product is a joint venture between
DECtrace and Smartstar Corporation. There is a royalty fee of $200.00
that internal as well as external customers are required to pay to
Smartstar for use of the product.
** If you use VTX PAK to get a PAK, your cost center will be cross
charged $200.00. **
DECtrace for VMS must be running on all the nodes for which you
want to collect ALL-IN-1 performance data. The DECtrace V1.1A
kit is available on DATABS::DECTRACE$V11AKIT in two savesets,
EPC011.A and EPC011.B (both are required). The license PAK is
available internally in $VTX PAK. DECtrace T1.2 is available in
DECtrace$V12KIT. Either version can be used to collect the ALL-IN-1
data.
You will need only a minimal knowledge of DECtrace to run the
ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports. The ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports
User's guide describes what you need to get started and provides
some examples. There are also sample command procedures included
with the kit to schedule collections and format the raw DECtrace
data. The DECtrace documentation can be found in
DATABS::DECTRACE$V11DOC.
Thanks
Dave

Note 11.2 ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports 2 of 2
BEGOOD::HEBERT "Cyberdyne Systems Model 101-A" 86 lines 27-APR-1992 17:26
-< getting the OA facility definition >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To collect event data from ALL-IN-1 using DECtrace, you must have the
ALL-IN-1 facility definition loaded in your DECtrace administration database.
There are a number of scenarios on how to accomplish this first step.
(There's a doc error concerning this that's mentioned at the bottom of
this reply.)
A. Installed DECtrace V1.1A, then installed ALL-IN-1.
For ALL-IN-1 Version 2.4 --
Typically, layered products ship their own facility definition in their
software kit. The facility definition is supposed to be inserted into the
DECtrace admin db and/or the facility library EPC$FACILITY.TLB by the
installation procedure. However, ALL-IN-1 V2.4 did *not* ship their own
facility definition.
The ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports kit includes a facility definition for
ALL-IN-1 V2.4. After installing the reporter, the definition will be in the
A1R$EXAMPLES directory (translates to SYS$COMMON:[SYSHLP.EXAMPLES.A1R]). So,
install the reporter, and then use the following command to insert the
definition into the DECtrace admin db:
$ COLLECT INSERT DEFINITION /REPLACE A1R$EXAMPLES:ALLIN1V24_FAC_DEF.EPC$DEF
For ALL-IN-1 Version 3.0 --
If DECtrace is already installed, the facility definition will be installed
correctly by the ALL-IN-1 installation procedure.
B. Installed ALL-IN-1, then installed DECtrace
For ALL-IN-1 Version 2.4 --
The ALL-IN-1 facility definition was not shipped with either ALL-IN-1 V2.4
or DECtrace V1.1A. You must install the Performance Reports software to
get the facility definition. (You don't have to install the reporter on
the same node, because the definition is transportable.)
$ COLLECT INSERT DEFINITION /REPLACE A1R$EXAMPLES:ALLIN1V24_FAC_DEF.EPC$DEF
For ALL-IN-1 Version 3.0 --
If DECtrace is not installed when you install ALL-IN-1, the ALL-IN-1 V3.0
installation procedure inserts the facility definition into the DECtrace
facility library which comes with VMS 5.2 and higher. Once you've installed
DECtrace, you must move the definition into the administration database.
Either:
Run the DECtrace post-installation procedure EPC$EXAMPLES:EPC$INSERT.COM
This will replace some facility definitions shipped with DECtrace and
then allows you to insert everything from the facility library into the
DECtrace administration database. Because this will insert the
definitions for more facilities than just ALL-IN-1, the commands below
may be preferable.
Or:
Extract and move the single facility definition for ALL-IN-1 V3.0.
$ LIBRARY/TEXT/EXTRACT=OAV3.0/OUTPUT=ALLIN1V30_FAC_DEF.EPC$DEF -
_$ SYS$SHARE:EPC$FACILITY.TLB
$ COLLECT INSERT DEFINITION /REPLACE ALLIN1V30_FAC_DEF.EPC$DEF
The first example in the ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports for VMS User's Guide
(page 1-1) fails to list the name of the facility library to extract the
definition from. If you use the example as shown in the docs, the system
prompts you for the library name as follows:
$ LIBRARY/TEXT/EXTRACT=OAV3.0/OUTPUT=ALLIN1V30_FAC_DEF.EPC$DEF
_Library: SYS$SHARE:EPC$FACILITY.TLB
The name of the library is correctly shown in an example in Chapter 3 of the
User's Guide. It's also referenced several times in the DECtrace
Installation Guide.

ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports for VMS
Robert Denn
DTN: 264-1197
MS: NUO1-1/A11
o Provides detailed ALL-IN-1 performance data to ALL-IN-1
administrators interested in improving the performance of
their ALL-IN-1 systems.
o Allows clusterwide monitoring of ALL-IN-1 performance
o Takes advantage of ALL-IN-1's use of DECtrace performance
data to provide detailed ALL-IN-1 usage and performance
reports.
o Unique capability not provided through any other ALL-IN-1
product.
INTRODUCTION
VAX ALL-IN-1 system managers and administrators live with the formidable task
of characterizing the usage and performance of their ALL-IN-1 systems, yet this
characterization is vital both in understanding the performance of existing
configurations and in planning for future growth.
With ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports, the valuable data they need to accomplish
this is now available. ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports provides detailed
information about each ALL-IN-1 system, identifying the top users by CPU,
Disk I/O, and by application function. It also provides elapsed times,
executing frequency, and system resource usage by each of the application
functions.
ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports take advantage of the DECtrace for VMS data which
is provided in behalf of ALL-IN-1. DECtrace for VMS is a general performance
data collection product which captures application and performance data
from a wide variety of Digital products, including ALL-IN-1.
PRODUCT DETAILS
ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports consists of an easy-to-use menu-driven product
that analyzes the ALL-IN-1 performance data collected by DECtrace and produces
a variety of performance reports. These reports are designed to give the
ALL-IN-1 system manager/administrator sufficient information to identify
specific bottlenecks as well as which ALL-IN-1 functions and users are using
the most system resources. The reports are produced in both tabular and "text"
graphic format, both capable of being displayed and printed on VT terminals and
line printers.
Some of the reports are:
o Top Functions by Execution Frequency, Disk I/O, and CPU usage
o Top Users and Top Users by function
o Usage over time by function and user
The character-cell user interface means that the software can be run from
a standard VT terminal, or through any of the supported ALL-IN-1 user devices.
POSITIONING
ALL-IN-1 Performance reports should be sold into ALL-IN-1 installations
concerned about measuring and improving ALL-IN-1 performance. Typically,
these are the medium to large ALL-IN-1 installations.
RESOURCES
ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports for VMS Information Sheet, EC-F1744-45
ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports for VMS SPD/SSA (39.48.00)
HARDWARE/SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports supports ALL-IN-1 Version 2.4 or later.
ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports for VMS is command line driven. It runs on any
valid VAX VMS configuration capable of running the ALL-IN-1 software.
ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports requires DECtrace for VMS on the node
where reporting is to be done. DECtrace for VMS Runtime software must
be installed on each node in the ALL-IN-1 system for which ALL-IN-1
performance data is to be collected.
The VAX Rdb/VMS Runtime software must be installed on the system
running the ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports in order to format the collected data
in preparation for analysis and reporting.

| 582.3 | ACCVIO in TM after Installation (Release notes states not all necessary forms) | VNAACT::GACH | Robert Gach, NSCT Vienna, 754/1360 | Fri Aug 07 1992 09:54 | 68 |
Hello,
I have installed the ALL-IN-1 Performance Reports and found a problem with the
documentation.
The Release Notes below says you have to modify some TM Forms to avoid ACCVIO.
I modified all forms as described, but in the Events Index, I always got an
ACCVIO. The solution was, that most of the forms are members of form sets.
You have to "modify" the other member of the form set to bring them in
SITEOAFORM too.
Here is a list of forms wich are missing from the Release Notes.
o TMMENU
o TMEVINDEX (This was the missing form for the Index options.
If this form is not in SITEOAFORM, ALL-IN-1 never
use the modified forms TMSEV_OPTIONSn.)
o TMS_MORE_PAGE2
o TMS_MORE_PAGE3
o TMSEV_OPTIONS3
o TMSEV_OPTIONS4
o TMSTG_OPTIONS2
o TMSTG_OPTIONS3
o TMXT_MORE
o MORE$SCROLL$KEYS$INDEX
regards,
Robert

1.1.1 Need to Customize ALL-IN-1 Time Management
A problem exists with several Time Management options
when using the metering facility running under DECtrace.
An access violation may occur under these circumstances.
(Note that using metering without DECtrace causes no
such problems.) In order to overcome this problem, you
must customize the following forms using Customization
Management:
o TMET
o TMS
o TMS_MORE
o TMSEV_OPTIONS1
o TMSEV_OPTIONS2
o TMSTG_OPTIONS1
o TMXT
