555.0. "message delivery notification delay" by WAYOUT::ALLAMS () Thu Apr 23 1992 10:30
Hi,
	The scenario:
Two ALL-IN-1 machines, both running patched 2.4/british systems,
on vms 5.4 with MR v3.1.
One of the machines has a local message router, the other a remote
	one.
A mail message was sent from the machine with local mr, to the
other machine. A notification message that the message was
undeliverable was returned after 2 weeks.
The account that was being sent to used to exist on the remote
machine, but had been deleted, but the network.dat entry still
remained. The question is, why did it take so long for the
	message to get returned?
The message points to the node name, and says:
	diagnostic message purged by operator

| | Steve,

Diagnostic message purged by operator is not an ALL-IN-1 message
but comes from Message Router aka MAILbus.

I think it's a configuration parameter on the Transfer Service but I
don't have my MR books on me and I'm prepared to be wrong on this.

If you or someone has the MR books we might be able to come up with
    a good reason (excuse).

    regards,

| | That message is associated with the msg being deleted out of the
mailbox. This is done on some MR house keeping thing.

But if it had been picked up by the fetcher a real non-delivery report
would have been made. So it would seem that the mail went to an
erroneous mail box. Check the address, check the mailbox and the node.
