    Is it possible to use the LAT protocol to create a display on a
    workstartion 3100 instead of DECNET?
    
    The DECNET way works fine but when I try :- 
    
    on the Workstation :-
    $ @STARTNET
    $ @LTLOAD
    $ set host VAX
    
    On the VAX:-
    $ SET DISPLAY/CREATE/TRANS=LAT/NODE=LAT_08002Bxxyyzz
    $ MC DECW$PUZZLE
    
    I get :-
    
    X Toolkit Error: Can't Open display
    %DWT-F-DWTABORT, xtoolkit fatal error
    
    I know it's unsupported, I was just curious...
    
    I would like to use another workstation which only has a TTA2: - terminal
    server connection ie no ethernet and on that run decwindows -- not just
    the puzzle ;-}
    
    I have looked at the other questions about LAT in this conference but
    they don't seem to give a definate case for a workstation, if it isn't
    possible -- please say so, but if it can be done -- how?

No.  The only way that a LAT transport is supported is over Ethernet
for the VT1000 series.  There is no serial LAT support that I am aware of.

    RE .1 -- Thinking about it I cannot think of a way that a serial LAT
    connexion could be done.

    To take this question a bit further...
    
    But if the 3100 is on the same ethernet as a VAX could I use a LAT
    display rather than a DECNET display? That way I could have a
    connection from my workstation to the easynet, that's better than using
    TTA2:

    As far as I know, only the VT1xxx series of DECwindows terminals
    supports the LAT transport for the display.  What advantage is there
    on a VAXstation to using LAT instead of DECnet?

LAT is sooo much faster than decnet.  Try using a decterm to a VXT (which uses
LAT...)  ZOOOM!

No, the appropriate driver etc is not there for LAT on the server side.

    RE what advantage? -- beside speed (don't know about this - I haven't got
    this to work -- yet ;-) ) I can use my workstation to create windows on
    an easynet node... bliss...
    
    RE .6  So the easynet VAX doesn't have the drivers for a LAT display on
    a 3100 but it does have the drivers for a LAT display on a 1000, is
    that what you mean?
    
    I'll have a look in the VXT conference to see if that can do what I
    want.

On the application side, the drivers are the same to a VXT or a 3100.  The
problem is that the *3100* doesn't have the drivers to deal with that direction
of lat.
