| Maybe someone closer to the subject can figure out the answer from just your
question, but as a generalist, I would have to ask for a lot more information.
For example, you say "window color settings" but only give one setting. Which
one is that foreground? background? What is the other one? I'll assume they
are low contrast.
You say grayscale printing. I assume you are talking about PrintScreen? Are
you getting output in PostScript or DDIF? I assume PostScript.
You say "can't print". Does that mean that the paper does not come out, that the
printer goes up in smoke, that the paper has nothing on it, that it is garbled,
etc etc? I assume you get a more-or-less blank (or black) sheet.
Based on making assumptions about the answers to the above as well as a whole
series of guesses about other things I don't know about, I suspect the problem
may be that the "black and white" mode simply does a simple look at the colors
and everything that is brighter than a certain level becomes white and darker
becomes gray. If the fg and bg are set in such a way that they contrast when
seen in color, but are both fairly dim or fairly bright, the simple black/white
algorithm will translate them both to either black or white.
