Is it possible to run a remote login or run the session manager
remotely from an ULTRIX system? I've tried to do it between
two DECstation 3100s and dxsession just does not want to come
up remotely. My customer has:
Client: DS3100 ULTRIX DECwindows TCP/IP & DECnet
Server: IBM PS/2 mod 50z TCP/IP (Excelan) Xwindows (GSS)
He'd like to run things remotely on the PS/2.
So the questions are:
- Can I run a remote session to a PC?
- Do I need PC DECwindows to do it? If so, this is unacceptable,
unless PC DECwindows can run over the Excelan board and use
Excelan TCP/IP.
- If it is possible, HOW do I do it? Please list exact steps to
follow.
Sorry, I have already looked at all topics with "remote" in them,
and they only talk about VMS DECwindows.

The session manager attempts to set the security list of the server.
This, however, can only be done by a client running locally on the
machine. Therefore, if you're running the session manager remotely it
will die with an X error when it calls the Xlib function to set the
security list.
If you're running UWS 2.2 or later (e.g. UWS 4.0), then you can set
sm.security to False, and this will keep the session manager from
trying to set the security list. Once you do this, you should be able
to run dxsession remotely.

One other thing to keep in mind is interoperability of the
applications. There is a special SPD (no I don't know the number, it is
referred to by the UWS and DECwindows/VMS SPDs) which specifies the
interoperability characteristics of DECwindows between VMS, ULTRIX,
and PC platforms. What was found was that a number of DECwindows
applications do not do a very good job of running smoothly on small
screens or with keyboards which are not LK201 compatible. While your
customer may be able to get many applications to work they should not
expect all of them to. In addition to all this they will almost
certainly have to play with customization options to use different
fonts than the applications would use in a DECwindows environment.
