| | Do you understand the difference between the DECwindows enviroment and
    the X Window System environment?

Is the target environment for this port:

    (a) a system which only has Xlib ?
    (b) a system which has Xlib and the X toolkit intrinsics ?
    (c) a system which has Xlib, X toolkit intrinsics, and is a potential
for porting the Motif toolkit ?
    (d) something else ?

Xlib is the client's low level programming interface to functions of
    the X Window System.

Sorry if I didn't specify it before.

| | If the target environment has X tookit instrisics, the choices would
    appear to be:

    (a) the customer removes the UIL/DRM calls and replaces them with
XtCreateWidget (XtSetArg, XtAddCallbacks, XtManageChild, etc.) and...

    (b) implements equivalent widgets to the DECwindows widgets he's
currently using (or obtain public domain equivalents)

    _or_

ports MOTIF to the target environment

    	(b) is actually just "re-implement the DECwindows toolkit"

Gee, aren't we doing a wonderful job with all this openness.
I tried to get hold of DECwindows widget sources from OSF a
while back and discovered that it was virtually impossible.
(Yes, I should have gone to the product manager and didn't, I know)
My point is, these first customer's experiences with porting from
DECwindows to other platforms are important! They are the ones
that will get quoted in the press and will stick in the minds of
the MIS managers, wondering how portable X-windows really is.
HP is already beating on us that they have Motif already so
don't go off and use DECwindows (I don't know how true this is,
I know they originated lots of it but I bet they don't have
everything that OSF will offer - eg UIL).

Why don't we dole out the Dwt sources to all and sundry? I anyhow
heard that they will be out on microfiche soon. (or was that FUD).

Sorry to flame, and I know its not as easy as I make out, but I
think in a case like this we should come to the rescue of the
customer. (He did buy DEC after all - silly him).

| | I think you need to tell your customer that there aren't any
implemented standards yet. Plans include Motif and XUI neither of
which are available together yet. Wait till the baby's born before
you start to criticize it!
