For starters, what do you mean by "download an ULTRIX operating
system and DECwindows software to a MicroVAX II system"?
What version of software is this? Did you perform a Remote
Installation Services [aka RIS] installation? Do you have a
valid ULTRIX license for the system that you downloaded to?
This last question is not of technical importance, but it is
of very high LEGAL importance. You are NOT allowed to run
ULTRIX software on an unlicensed system except under special
circumstances. You could jeopardize the entire company's right
to use and sell UNIX software (such as ULTRIX) if you violate
    the licensing terms.

Also, why did you disable the /etc/ttys line that starts
the X Server along with Session Manager & X Prompter?

| | I was to avoid much confusion as I can, but I guess I did not do well.
I'll try to answer those questions in .1 and to clear up what I'm doing.

    >>> Do you have a valid Ultrix license for the system that you downloaded
        to?

Yes, I do. I was an Ultrix system.

    >>> What do you mean by "download and Ultrix O.S. and DECwindowns software
        to a MicroVAX II system"?

Well, basically what I'm doing is to run extractly same set of software
(Ultrix v3.0 and DECwindows, in this case) on MicroVAX II as the ones
on my VS 2000 system with no more than one installation. Another
        words, I'd like to install Ultrix v3.0, DECwindows, etc, on VS 2000;
and use a tool - RSM(Remote System Manager) - to pull the VS 2000's
root and usr file systems over to RSM's library; and later on use
RSM's operation - ISL(Initial System Load) - to propagate these
software to other systems within the same LAN area.

    >>> Did you perform a RIS(Remote Installation Services) installation?

Yes, I did install Ultrix v3.0 and DECwindows onto my VS 2000 via
        RIS.

    >>> Why did you disable the /etc/ttys line that starts the X server along
with Session Manager & X Prompter?

Every step seemed to go smooth until DECwindows is up. The Ultrix &
DECwindows are running on VS 2000 for quite a while without problems.
RSM did successfully fetch the root and usr file systems from VS 2000
and RSM's ISL reports successfully load the file systems over to
MicroVAX II. In fact, the last step of RSM/ISL brings up the system
successfully, DECwindows is running. I got the DECwindows' "DIALOG
BOX" waiting for me to enter user name and password. Up to this
point, everything happens just the way I have expected. But then,
I can make my key stroke echo on screen, I can use the mouse.
Fortunately, I was able to 'set host' or 'dlogin' into this system.
Since I need the console, so I then disable the line in /etc/ttys.

I was able to use the console after disable the line in /etc/ttys.

Hope this will help you to understand what I'm doing. I'm new to
DECwindows. May be the question should be asked was "is there any
different DECwindows software or setup in between VS 2000 and MicroVAX
    II?"

I hope I did not confuse you again.

    Thanks alot for your help,
    Alex
