762.0. "Decwindows hanging" by NSSG::SYSTEM () Wed May 10 1989 16:21

I have just installed Decwindows 5.1 on a vaxstation  running VMS 5.1
with 6 meg. After being in Decwindows for a few minutes the screen goes
blank and hangs.

The following is what I have set for the process and page & swapfiles:

pagefile.sys = 35000
swapfile.sys = 20000

Has anyone had this problem before?

    I haven't heard of symptoms like this on VMS V5.1. When you say
    that "the screen goes blank and hangs" exactly what are you seeing?
    Is the hang permanent, or do things unfreeze after 30 seconds or so?
    
    Can you log into the workstation via set host from another system
    to look at what's going on? It would be very useful to see the output
    of a DCL show system command while in this state. 

    Pagefile looks damn small. Try 55000.
    

    Increased my pagefile to 55000 and it has not hung all day. Looks like
    thats was the problem.  Thanks Andy

    I only know through bitter expeirence.... :-)

    I am working on a problem of DW hanging on a VSII running with 5.1
    of VMS and Decwindows. The problems has occured after pausing
    Decwindows for the night and so the next morning the keyboard shows
    one or more leds stuck on. The mouse moves the pointer fine but
    it doesn't respond to keyboard input for the password. But just
    today Decwindows hung after stepping away for a few moments.
    
    The machine has 9 meg of memory and is a standalone system running
    on a Rd53 disk. We can set host to the system and poke around. We
    haven't found anything wrong like running out of resources, pagefile,
    swapfile, etc. The QVSS and the keyboard have been changed to no
    avail. Any ideas for what to look for next time it hangs????

    Well today it didn't hang, but we left the windows logged in. In
    the times before DecW was in the paused or logged out state.
    There is three of these systems with the same configuration, and
    all three were made from the same distribution. Still looking for
    ideas....
