664.0. "loginout accvios intermittently" by CSSE32::MERMELL (Window Pain) Mon Apr 24 1989 18:21

On booting and starting up DECWindows, the login window appears
for a few seconds then disappears. LOGINOUT has aborted with an
access violation. (I see this from the accounting record).
If I abort the server and resubmit DECW$startup the same thing happens.

This is happening on one node (VS2 with 11 mb) of a many-node cluster.
It's not happening on any others. No h/w errors are reported (sho err).
It's running VMS version T5.2-41S.

There's nothing strange in sys$specific. There's a cluster-common
sysuaf so I know there's nothing funny in the system account record.
The node is in a different area from the boot node, but this is true
for other satellites with no problems.

There's nothing funny in MODPARAMS.DAT. I did an autogen/reboot.
The problem persists. DECW$STARTUP.COM does not report any problems
or bad parameters. There are enough global sections and global
pages.

If I define/exec/table=decw$logical_names decw$login_log <filename>
to try to get more info, every startup of decwindows will now
successfully invoke a login window and the log file is created but
empty!! It will not fail! From this I might infer that loginout
had trouble talking to OPA0: when that was its sys$error, but I
can't find anything funny regarding this node's treatment of OPA0.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to look for next?
