    The bookreader comes as part of DECwindows. If you need just the
    image, you may want to try to extract it froom some of the DECW051
    kits.

    What is the acceptable way of redefining decw$books so that the
    books can live on some other disk?
    
    DECW$STARTAPPS tells us not to edit it.
    
    Do we have to def/exec/table=decw$logical_names or is def/system

    I use DEFINE/SYSTEM, pointing it at a DFS-served disk on our
    cluster, and it works like a charm for me!

    When we installed DECW books, it asked me if I want a disk different
    from the standard directories.
    
    The installation procedure will then change the (in the kit supplied)
    command procedure DECW$STARTBOOK.COM to reflect the changed
    directories.

          KIT INSTALLATION

          Prior to installing the online documentation savesets, you
          must define the logical name DECW$BOOK, indicating the 
          location from which the Bookreader will access the online 
          manuals. By default, the Bookreader will look for these files
          in the directory named SYS$COMMON:[DECW$BOOK]. If you wish
          to store the online documentation files in another directory,
          you must redefine the logical name DECW$BOOK to point to that
          new location.

          The online documentation savesets should be installed using
          the standard VMSINSTAL procedure. To begin the installation
          procedure, enter the command

               $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL DECWBOOK051 device-name

          where device-name is the device from which you are loading 
          the savesets.

          You may install all of the manuals, or select each manual
          individually, as prompted by the installation procedure.
          You will be asked to verify the definition of the logical
          name DECW$BOOK before the procedure copies any savesets to
          the target directory.

          Please refer to the _VMS DECwindows Desktop Applications
          Guide_ for more information on the Bookreader application.

    Is there an installation guide for the Online Doc kit or can anybody
    tell me how much disk space (and anything else) it requires?

The installation guide is roughly this:

	$ MOUNT CDROM

(actually, you may have to setup a logical name right too, but whatever,
it's trivial and is included inside the CD case ;-).

The files are not in savesets.  If you want to "install" them to
another disk the procedure is:

	$ COPY CD:xxx DISK:

Size: the entire VMS Docset is on the order of 200MB ... unless you
got plenty of space to waste I strongly recommend the CD.   And it's
just about as fast anyway.

There's a Bookreader conference somewhere with lots of hints and kinks.

	Sure can...

Right ... it's just a disc.  The fact that it is optical doesn't change
anything ... anything you can do with a "regular" disk you can with
these, except write to it.

It's not so much that it is "as fast" as a mag disk, but rather that
it is "fast enough".  That is, it keeps up with the data requests
made to it.  However, as you increase the number of accessors, then
eventually the faster speed of a magnetic disk will become noticable.

BUT, we had 6 people simultaneously beating on a single RRD50, at
Fall Decus 87 (not 88) and the RRD50 kept up (of course the slow
CPUs we had probably helped ;-).

Anyway, give it a try and let us know.  We have enough evidence
to encourage you, but would like success stories back so we can
tell customers.

Remember that if there is a book or two that is much more frequently
accessed, you can move just them to mag-disk and use a search list;
that way you get the best of both worlds.

There's lots of things for which an RRD40 would be horribly slow;
but that's the glass-half-empty attitude.  What's important is
the applications for which it is sufficiently fast, which include
online documentation, saveset restoration, many instances of image
activation, etc.

PS: adjusting RMS parameters (and maybe DFS???) may vary your mileage
    a lot.  I've no idea what the right settings are, but things like
    read-ahead and global buffering stike me as important when dealing
    with contiguous files, big display chunks, and slow seek speeds.

    Let us know of any dobees and don'tbees.

    I did not think that a search list would work. At least, when I tried
    it, it did not. On the other hand, since the second field in the book
    and bookshelf files is a file name for a bookshelf or book, it is
    possible to use this to locate the books anywhere. Certainly on a
    DFS-served disk.

You may be correct ... I remember seeing several notes in the Bookreader
conference about this.  Regardless, as you point out, the cat can be
skinned another way.

DECW$BOOK can, in fact, be a search list.  The catch is that you must have a
single LIBRARY.DECW$BOOKSHELF file for the entire search list. There's no
merging of multiple "libraries".
