    Barb, I hope this is Ok. My nephew is assigned to the America carrier
    group. The America has gone over, but his ship the Radford has not. We
    just don't know and it's on a day to day basis. We pray he won't but
    they need his ship there. It's a destroyer escort.

A friend I have not actually met face-to-face; I began writing to her through
another friend and we have developed a correspondance friendship.  Seems very
fitting to think of her here.

Sigh... she is 90 miles from the S/K border and I have discovered that out the
back door of her tent are Hawk missles, Patriot missles and MLDS.  I grow very
uneasy as we approach the deadline...It's as though I can feel the fear...

    My cousin is a Marine and is in Saudi.  Please include Jim Richard
    and his very pregnant wife, Julie, in your thoughts and prayers. 
    I'm hoping and praying that all of this doesn't end in war.

    my dear brother philip is commander of a unit in germany scheduled
    to be disbanded in 1991, after which time he will be sent 'where
    needed'. i think where he's needed is with his spouse and new-born.
    

    My SO Stacey Jueal's close friend Margie is affianced to a Coast Guard
    officer I only know by his first name.  Wayne volunteered in August and
    went to Saudi Arabia in September (and Margie was *pissed*).  Remember
    Wayne.
    
    Stacey's friend David, a Marine Corporal, was sent to Saudi Arabia in
    August in the first mobilization.  Julie, in Twentynine Palms California, 
    was delivered of their first child in December, and is having a hard time 
    making ends meet now that David's pay doesn't include a subsistence 
    allowance (since they feed the troops directly when they're in the field.) 
    Remember David; and remember Julie.
    
    Of the many people I served with on active duty in ROTC and in the
    USAF, from 1979-1987, I'm certain that some are and will be actively
    involved in the gulf activity.  Their names are too many to list.

    My thoughts for my cousin, Lt. Col. Peter Philpott - he's out there
    with the forces of the United Arab Emirate as an expert on mine
    warfare.
    
    And especially my thoughts for my Godfather, Sir Peter de la Billiere,
    who is commanding the British ground forces...

    My nephew Michael Cluver is on the USS Saratoga which is either
    in the Mediterranean or the Persian Gulf.

    I would not want to be on the U.S.S. Saratoga if it was tied up to 
    a pier.  It is a OLD Firetrap.  I served on OLD firetraps.   Floating
    Coffins is what they are called.  Also, they are the first targets.
    
    The term "Destroyer Escort" is no longer used in the US Navy, I think
    that it has been upgraded to FF = "Fast Frigate".  Their job is to 
    stop, intercept or destroy incoming to the Carrier.  ANYWAY they can.
    Which means placing themselves between firepower and target.
    Also, they will pick up downed flyers and numerous other duties.
    
    I have no wish for war.  But, this will have to be dealt with 
    either now or later.  and now is the time.   with almost 
    400,000 troops in place, USE them. Get in, HIT HARD, VERY HARD, 
    and get out.

    My thoughts are with several guys in the US fleets.. when I lived in 
    Perth W Australia (until Aug 14 this year).. the US gulf fleet used
    to come into Fremantle for R&R every couple of months..I have sat
    and chatted with quite a few of your sailors in bars...don't know any
    names..it was always 'bill' or 'sam' but I hope they come through safe.
    
    Also several old mates in 3 RTR and especially Bob Dando a mate from
    my teens who is with the British Armour as an engineer.

    My son-in-law, Sgt. Richard F. Herber, now in the Saudi sand.  We have
    already been told that if there is war he will be in the front lines,
    or possibly behind enemy lines.  He is in "special forces" (the green
    berets).  I pray he makes it home to see his son and daughter grow up,
    and to know the child due in May.  And I pray for my daughter, who has
    to be prepared to deal with ALL possibilities.

    I hope I can convey my feelings adequately here.
    
    I have no family member, no friend, no aquaintance in any branch of the
    U.S. services, in the Gulf or elsewhere.  My own kids are (thank God)
    too young; my own contemporaries, including the man I loved then, are
    Vietnam-era.
    
    So, paraphrasing someone's comment about the Vietnam Vet's Memorial in
    D.C., I have to say:  all of them.  Men, women, moms, dads, sons,
    daughters.  My sisters and brothers.  My countrymen and women.

    Bill got re-activated on the 9th of January.  Everyone here at the
    Western CMC will miss him and will be thinking of him.

    I had so many friends in ROTC in college I can't possibly list them
    all.  I have lost track of all of them, so I have no idea if any of
    them are Over There, but I would imagine that at least some are.  My
    thoughts are with them, and with all the people who face possible war
    and death in the Middle East (the Iraqian soldiers, too; I doubt they
    have any more say over what happens and whether we go to war than our
    soldiers, do, but like our soldiers, they pay the price with their
    lives.)

    I know quite a few people over there.  Three that come to mind
    immediately are 
    
    	Ron and Don Selvy :  Both pilots, graduated from the Naval Academy
    			     with honours, I believe.  (twin, age: 27/28)
    	Nikki Dobbs :  I'm unsure, mechanic possibly. His age: 18, I believe.
    
    These are people that I currently am in contact with their families.  I
    grew up in a military town, so I can probably guess that there are at
    least 5-10 other people I know who are over there and I'm just not 
    directly aware of it (because I've lost contact with them since moving).
    
    
    Come home, all.....healthy, I pray.

    I lost 7 friends and classmates in Viet Nam. I don't want to go
    through this again. 
    
    My daughter's best friend has two siblings in the gulf, a brother
    in the Marines and a sister in the Navy.  Kat says that if the war
    is still going on, she's going to join because she's not going to
    let the men she knows bear all the death alone.

    I didn't say "27/28 respectively".  I wrote it that way to make it
    clear that they were around 27 to 28, I'm not aware of their exact age
    and/or their birthday, but they did graduate two years ahead of me from

    Capt. Dale J. Souza, U.S. Army Reservs, artillary.  My brother was
    activated on Thanksgiving, he was suppose to be in Saudi for
    Christmas, however, shipping delays are keeping him stateside until mid
    Jan (or right about now).  This is a very emotional time for my family,
    we pray and we hope, I feel so very helpless and scared.
    
    I also have a friend of 12 years that is in the reserves with her
    husband and I have not been able to contac them to find out how they
    are, in addition my best friend's husband may be on his way.  I will
    post these names when I find out if they are on their way..

    the good news:
    
      Porter Burks Cox, Col.USAF, Ret., my dad, should be home within the
    next few hours. I just got the call from my mother.
    
    the bad news:
    
      he is/was a chaplain with the Diplomatic Corps. of course, I'm 'not
    to read anything into this ...'
    
    
    quite honestly I'm thrilled that he's out of it ... after watching what
    the U.S. 'non-presence' in Cambodia did to him.  I'm also pleased, in a
    rather negative way, with the more honest pulling out of non-combatants
    this time around rather than leaving them there for the 'message it
    sends.'

    My brother, CPL Mio Franceschi...  
    
    His platoon isn't going, but last week he volunteered to go with
    another...  He got his shots yesterday, and will be headed out on
    the 25th.
    I'm thankful that he is only 6 hours away from me and that I have the
    time to drive up to see him this weekend before he goes.

    
    	Since many of the young men I graduated from high school with 
    	joined the military shortly after graduation, I'm sure there
    	are a few over there that I know.  And actually I'm glad that
    	I don't know "who" actually is.....I don't want to think about
    	it.
    
    	However, my cousin is in the reserves and depending on how
    	things go, could be called up.  He's safe at home for now.
    	A friend of his did go over though.  I'm not sure what branch
    	he's in but please pray for Bryan Sewell.  He is also the younger
    	brother of one of my classmates......
    
    	And I send my prayers out to everyone who has a family
    	member/friend/etc over there for their safe return.

    My nephew Darren, RA, who's been there for a fair while, and some former
    colleagues that I've managed to trace - Jerry, Simon and Bruce all pilots

    Not in the military, but my brother-in-law, a commercial transport
    pilot, is making 19-hour runs between London and Riyadh.  He sleeps in
    his plane and turns around and comes back...has witnessed SCUD/Patriot

    Re: .14  To close the loop, Rick is now home!!!!  He arrived yesterday
    afternoon, safe and sound, and in plenty of time for the new baby!  I
    can't begin to say how grateful I am.  (Or how much he and his family
