| | Dot,

I think there are several meanings (at least 2) for the term
"technical editor". I used to be a tech editor last year. I
worked for the manufacturing org in MKO. The term "tech editor"
in MY context was to lookover (edit) customer orders for
DEC systems. I would see if what they ordered as options or
add-ons would work (enuff power, space and I/O cabability)
with the system ordered. These were orders from the field
and sales would not get their certs until the order was
    "tech edited" as clean.

The other term for "tech editor" has to do with editing manuals
or documentation (I think) which I did not do.

    Hope this helps!

    pat:-)

| | If you're looking for a technical writing or editing job, you might be
interested in the WRITERNET conference (WR2FOR::WRITERNET), just to see
what writing/editing is like at DEC, and what is required for the
various positions, and what training programs are available....

| | Corporate User Publications (CUP) and Ed Services Development and
Publishing (ESDP) are two very large groups whose work requires a great
deal of editing. You might want to do some informational interviewing
    in those organizations.

Also...have you considered writing? Lots of people with your
    credentials are tech writers.

| | I have definitley considered writing. As far as being a software
writer is concerned, I would love it, but the problem is finding
a group to support you while in the training program. This group
also has to guarantee you a job afterwards.

Right now, most groups don't have that kind of money. The training
    course is several thousand dollars.

I am also finding that most groups have internal freezes going on.
All I can do is keep trying, right?

Thanks to everyone who replied and sent personal messages and help.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!
