| | Does anyone know how legitimate this organisation is? I don't believe
I've ever heard of them before.

If they are legitimate, it would be a pity to see them go under,
    wouldn't it?

                          <** Moderator Response **>
(The author of the basenote originally very considerately left it in a
hidden/nowrite state so that the mods could decide whether the appeal
for support implied in the quoted letter constituted "solicitation" on
the part of the basenote author. I judged that it does not, and unhid
the note. Unfortunately I didn't make the string writable, too. Until
    now.

Red-faced apologies to all who tried to respond meanwhile.

I had an opportunity to visit the National Women's Hall of Fame
about 3 years ago while traveling in upstate New York. It had
pictures of women and brief bio's of women such as Sojourner Truth
and Eleanor Roosevelt; and female artists, scientists and politicians.

As I recall, there was also a gift shop where one could by souvenirs and
postcards of famous women. Items could also be purchased via mail.

Hope it gets there on time (Monday!)

The location of the Museum is 76 Fall Street, Seneca Falls, NY 13148
    315-568-2936.

A plaque at the Museum reads: "...to honor in peretuity those women,
citizens of the United States of America, whose contributions to
the arts, athletics, business, education, government, the humanities,
philanthropy and acience, have been the greatest value for the develop-
    ment of their country."

The Hall "is devoted to recognizing and remembering American women
and achievement. their stories illuminate the lives of all women
and lend us courage and inspiration."

| | I just rang through. The director, Sally Parr, wasn't there so I won't
get the full story until tomorrow, but briefly here's the situation as
told me by the tour guide I talked with:

Their campaign goal was $100K. As of noon today they have $31K in
hand. They cannot continue unless they have some confidence of the
future, and the $100K is meant to get them out of debt and give some
breathing room while they solicit stable (well, relatively stable)
funding from the government and foundation sources. They are a non-
profit organisation, so matching funds apply.

They need $59K. How much of that would our community donate, do you
think? They and the art museum in Washington are the only museums I
know of that are dedicated to recording women's work.

Don't forget the Lesbian Archives in New York City -- there's a
neat article about them in this month's Sojourner.

Are you suggesting pledges, since it's too late to get checks there by
    mail?

I only vaguely knew about that one, Liz...but its name suggests that
its domain is more specialised, no?

I guess I didn't really have it worked out in my head all that clearly,
Nancy, but you're right, that would certainly work (as long as we then
    followed though! :-)
