    Here's what I'm doing already:
    
    -  buy "Good Sense" degradable trashbags, both the 13 & 30 gallon
       sizes.
    -  pack my groceries in paper (even tho sometimes I lose stuff when
       something leaks and the bottom bursts out)
    -  take my pop cans back to the store (packed 20 (30? some round
       number anyway) of the same sort in a paper bag, marked and closed 
       for easy return)
    -  cut up all the 6pack collars...including those i find on the
       street
    -  try not to eat by fastfood places such as McDonalds where they
       put up food in polystyrene regardless.
       
    What am I missing?

    Didposable diapers make up 3.4% of the nations non-biodegradable
    waste. I use cloth diapers and also save $10 per week.

    there is a great notes file on environmental issues:
        WASHDC::ENVIRONMENTAL_ISSUES
    
    there are 'what can i do?' notes (types of detergent to buy, use
    paper and other bio degradables, etc)
    
    there are 'form letter' notes on issues like the south american
    rain-forest destruction. (pressure works... for instance just this
    morning the Norwegian gov't banned hunting seal pups for 1 year
    due to international pressure).
    
    i would also look into what plans your town/community has for 
    implementing a recycling project (something i still have to do!)
    
    i also belong to organizations like the sierra club, world wildlife
    fund, and national wildlife federation.  they send out great monthly
    literature, and i found their synopsis of major politicians during
    the election very helpful.
    
    i am also currently involved in trying to get my DEC facility to
    recycle it's waste paper.
    
    it often seems that we as individuals have no control over those
    who are really killing the planet (the argentinians were warned
    about rocks where their oil tanker hit in antarctica, but they
    went ahead anyways).  sometimes i feel guilty just driving my car....
    but i hope that the voices calling for environmental protection
    will someday be heard.

    	Well, I know I'm not doing enough, but I try to cycle
    	to work as often as possible. Didn't do well last year,
    	because of other considerations. Did much better in
    	1987. I plan to do much better in 1989.
    
    	At least the Saab is well tuned according to specs.
    
    	I personally wonder when the government is going to do
    	something about the auto emissions. It's time for a
    	nationwide move to cleaner air.
    
    	Personally, I want it, but am skeptical about us giving
    	up or autos to any degree.

    i've been taking my newspapers to be recycled -- the town of stow
    is starting a recycling program and currently accept papers between
    10 and 1 on saturday mornings. (and you don't need to live in the
    town to bring your papers there). i also return my bottles and cans
    rather than throw them out.
    
    sometimes when i go for a walk in the woods (though not always),
    i pick up all the trash i see as i go along. i have a theory that
    people will be less likely to litter more if they don't see litter
    on the ground already. but in any case, it makes me feel good and
    it leaves the trails looking better.

    About 15 years ago the town of Stow had a recycling program. I was
    part of the committee of women that ran it. I wonder what happened
    to the previous efforts?
    
    Maggie, thanks for bringing up this topic. We used to be a very
    environmentally conscious family but as the kids have gotten
    older we slipped away from many of our good habbits.

    I just wanted to put in a plug for recycling.  I live in a town
    (Wilton, NH) that has one of the better recycling operations I've seen.
    Even over the 10 months I've lived in the town, I've been impressed
    by the general efficiency, by people's support of the process, and
    by efforts to further improve the operation.  I'm glad to see other
    towns in NH are looking at recycling - but the only thing that will
    make these other efforts a reality is people's support and action.
    Sometimes, all it takes is a few evenings here and there to attend
    some committee meetings.  Sometimes it takes more...

        Out here in the civilized world of San Jose, California ;-)
    we have curbside recycling.  All I have to do is put out my three
    bins, one with newspaper, one with aluminum and one with glass when
    I put out my trash and they're picked up for recycling.  The only
    problem is that some folks come by and take the aluminum themselves
    and sell them to recycling centers.

	Not only does Wilton have an excellent recycling program, but a
	sign at the recycling center proudly states:

		Federal funds......$0.00
		State funds........$0.00
		County funds.......$0.00
		Town funds...$xxx,xxx.xx

		WE DID IT OURSELVES!
