    When Don (my husband) was in Kanata he stopped by a used record
    store and asked them if they had any Ian and Sylvia records and
    was told that they are almost impossible to get. (Ours are quite
    scratched from being played so often). We saw them in concert
    our senior year in college and being fans already were hooked for
    life. We recently bought Ian Tyson's record "Cowboy Biography"
    which has a lot of good songs on it, including a rerecording of
    "Summer Wages' another favorite of ours. Apparently he and Sylvia
    were divorced years ago and she is a wealthy realestate type person
    in Montreal (or so we were told in a record store in New Haven last
    year by the manager of the store). Other favorites of ours are
    "National Hotel" and the song about a young man talking with his
    father ('years turn and life turns beyond windows and doors, and
    the life that he loved is not his anymore'.)

Also from "The Lovin' Sound" album:  was the song called "I don't need you"?
It began something like "I just can't understand, you let go of my hand,..."
It seems to me that the lyrics were nothing special, but I particularly liked
their harmony on it.

On the other hand, I thought that what they did to "The Circle Game" (a fine
song) paled beside the versions of both Tom Rush and the song's author, Joni
Mitchell.

    Yea, I know what you mean.  I usually associate some memories with
    music with scents.  Whenever I hear Elton John's version of "Lucy
    In The Sky With Diamonds" I smell oil paint (I was into Paint-by-
    numbers), and 3 Dog Night's "Let The Show Go On" makes me smell 
    seaweed (My family stayed at a beach house for a wk.), and one song
    that came out the year I received a Gingerbread house for Christmas,
    I smell the gingerbread!
    
    As for "Puff the Magic Dragon", that song brings no scents to me,
    but I do remember my siblings and I performing (acting out and singing)
    that song, and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone", as well as most
    other P,P&M, and Simon & Garfunkel songs when I was about 4.  To
    this day I can still see my parents faces when we would sit them
    on the couch, turn on the record, and start performing.  (Actually,
    Puff does bring the smell of our old living room back to me.)

    One afternoon we all just started singing, with both sisters and
    one brother on guitars, one brother on banjo, one brother on drums,
    me on tambourine, and my baby brother (who was 1 1/2 - 2 at the
    time) on coffee-can.  Now all of us are too spread out to perform
    together (though one sister and I sang at my grandmother's wedding),
    and no one really went even semi-pro.  Ah, but the memories!

    One of my happiest family memories is of the Thanksgiving that the
    whole family got together - and as we cleaned up from dinner we

    'cause she wasn't letting on to anyone that she was sick.  And with
    the general aura of joy that the singing inspired, no one noticed
    until much later that all Mom had done was sit and direct traffic

    It is a version of The Little Drummer Boy and a song about Peace

    Drummer Boy, then Bing sings the Drummer Boy while Bowie sings about
    peace, they both sing the middle verse about peace, then the each
    (simultaneously) finish their respective songs.
    
    This song (both the words and the harmony) is *SO* beautiful, it

    The Kinks did indeed release a song called "Father Christmas" that
    include Mike's lyrics from .188.  According to my copy of "Come Dancing
    with the Kinks - The Best of the Kinks 1977-1986" (Arista A2CD 8428),
    that track was "Never released on LP" (except for the double-LP edition
    of this collection, one supposes!)  The liner notes don't give any more
    details.
    
    I find the song rather cynical, though it is still fun.  Whether or
    not it is the same "Father Christmas" performed by others, I can't
    tell, but I've never heard this one done by anyone else.  The song was
    written by Ray Davies of the Kinks.
    
    Personally, I prefer "Come Dancing" and "Don't Forget to Dance".

    It is actually a very pretty song.

    It was actually a Greg Lake solo effort. When they re-mixed it for
    _Works_II_, Keith Emerson on synthesizer replaced the orchestra
    which was used on the single.
    
    It's a pretty melody but the lyrics are kind of "down" on Christmas,

    I don't see that last line as being necessarily down. I interpret
    it to mean "You get out of it what you put into it."  Some of the
    lyrics do sound somewhat cynical, but as a whole, the song seems

    Nit time:  There are three Bangles who don't sound child-like; they all
    take turns singing on various songs; usually the one who writes, sings. 
    This is one of the reasons I like the Bangles.  They have four voices
    and they use them as four voices.  "Bell Jar" is sung by either Vicki
    or Debbie Peterson; the other non-child-like one is Michael Steele.

Just finished listening to the entire CD, "Everything", by the Bangles.

You are right!

3 of the 4 women in The Bangles do not sound child-like.  

I thought I was listening to the exception when I heard "[Living in a]
Bell Jar" where the main voice is Vicki Peterson.....Probably because the
2 other Bangles' songs I was most familiar with, "In Your Room" and 
"Eternal Flame", were indeed sung by the *one* Bangle who sounds very
child-like, Susanna Hoffs.

Reading the lyrics to "In Your Room" also made me change the opinion
I formerly held on that song. I liked the way it sounded, but not what
I heard (if that makes sense!).  The "tables get turned" halfway through 
the song about who's doing what to whom.  Just listening to it off the 
radio led me to believe he was doing everything to her and she was passive.  
The lyrics don't read like that :-)!

The lyrics to "Bell Jar" are quite powerful - they describe a
beautiful but lonely woman who eventually commits suicide.  

last part reads:
			Attached to a mirror
			In her glass-sided prison
			She writes the note that will
  			   excuse her from this world
			It's complicated
			Living in a bell jar
			She suffocated
			Living in a bell jar.

Some questions for any Peter Gabriel fans out there:

In "In Your Eyes", what language is being sung in the background towards
the end of the song?  When I first heard it, my mind immediately flashed to 
some of the music I heard in the movie "Biko", about Stephen Biko who was
a leader of the rebellion against Apartheid in S. Africa.  I've looked for
the soundtrack to "Biko" everywhere, but I guess one was not made..
Is it  Bantu?   

What is "Mercy Street" about?  At first listen, I thought incest, from 
lines like "Looking for mercy in Daddy's arms..."

Besides "Don't Give Up", are there any other songs where Gabriel has teamed
up with Kate Bush?  She was incredible.

    but also of Clegg/Sambuka's "Asim Bonanga" (approximately translated as
    "we haven't seen them") which is also a very powerful song; if I

 My current favorite CD is the quasi-reincarnation of YES, ie the recording

of the Universe," "Teakbois," "Long Lost Brother of Mine," "Birthright,"
and the first track whose name I can't recall. The music is invigorating,
fresh, and new. I recommend this album to anyone who shares a respect for
superior musicianship and wants to hear something a bit out of the mainstream.
This is not another Yes album, though the essence of Yes is definitely
present.

      So rarely, new music comes along that shocks the careful 
      listener.  It draws so intently from some inner core that 
      we reverberate with recognition; with joy that this truth 
      has been captured.
      
      A recent album by a guitar-playing duo has stricken me with 
      that shock.  With "Indigo Girls", Amy Ray and Emily Saliers 
      have wrought a new truth in their music.  In a hopeless search 
      for genre, I describe their music as between country ballad 
      and blues, touched with the magics of both.  While only one 
      song has gained pop exposure yet ("Closer To Fine", excellent, 
      btw), it in no way defines the limits of this tapestry.  
      
      Every song qualifies as sensitive, sometimes marvelous poetry.  
      Words and phrases are alive with power.  These are the powers 
      of life; anguish, rage, hope, the emotions burst within these 
      lyrics.  The musicians' voices are full enraptured with these 
      emotions, and the supporting orchestration (mostly accoustic 
      guitar, slide guitar, and unobtrusive percussion) supports and 
      exposes those marvelous voices.  It is an exquisite work of art.
      
      OK, I had one quibble.  I'm not a spiritual kind of guy,
      and the lyrics were full of past and present implications
      of spiritual battles won and lost, and even slightly 
      tinted with a Christian orientation.  I greatly dislike 
      such as distracting, and false-for-me...yet for the marvels 
      of this effort, and as a gesture of respect towards those 
      artists whos' very real, emotional pains (shared with us 
      here), were shaped by their spiritual battles, I can only 
      salute this effort in its entirety, spritual emphasis and 
      all.  Not for me to dare complain of such artistry.
      
      I'll be posting some of the song lyrics in the Poetry
      note (535.96-535.99), yet I strongly recommend the music.

    I've changed it since, but I even had indigogirls as my password for a
    while...  :-)
    
    I'd describe them as acoustic guitar, with a touch of country and a LOT
    of rock in the voices.  Their music is not what I usually listen to,
    but as a singer-type I find them fascinating -- lots of raw passion and
    power.  Amy Ray is the deeper, more expressive voice with a ragged
    edge, Emily Saliers is the higher voice with a husky edge.  
    
    I also like having music in a good range for women to sing in -- they
    have interesting interweaving harmonies.
    
    My favs are:  "Closer to Fine," "Secure Yourself," and "Blood and
    Fire."  "Closer to Fine" in particular is great!  About not looking to
    authority and others for guidance about life, but accepting "life's
    little twisty passages"...  I didn't see a Christian bent, but I'll
    look again.

	Not to be a bandwagon jumper or anything, but my Indigo Girls CD has
had more play than any of the others I own.  Judging from DougO's note in
another conference, I've had my CD about 2 weeks longer than he has...

	My MAIL personal name was "Blood & Fire are too much for these
restless arms to hold..." for a week a while back...

	I do catch a bit of rah-rah Christian philosophy, but, as much as
I usually dislike it, it doesn't seem to bother me in this case.

    Ya know, I really hate it when *I* discover a band which no one
    else is supposed to know about and suddenly all these notes start
    showing up.  Its so difficult lately to stay out of the mainstream!
    
    Actually, I'm not sure why I like them.  I, as a matter of principle,
    dislike music with strong religious overtones: and their music is
    definitely as religious in nature as, say, Amy Grant.  And their sound
    is somewhat strange, almost coarse, but it really grows on you.  Super
    music to fall asleep to!

    five months ago, Shawn & Rickie showed up on my doorstep with 'something
    new, something substantive, something _in_your_range_, Annie!!!'
    
    Great, but there's two of them and one of me, guys...I ain't _that_
    good.
    
    Being very spiritual myself, most of what they have to say strikes a
    deep chord. I'm surprised to hear their philosphy described as
    'Christian rah-rah', but willing to admit that my own inner vision of
    the deity could cloud my perceptions.  [I _did_ change 'his' to 'her'
    in Prince of Darkness, though...it just felt better]
    
    Kid Fears brought tears to my eyes for the memories it brought back of
    both the pain and the healing.  I've travelled alot of the roads these
    songs cover.
    
    I've re-taped twice from disc, because my cassettes get furry from use
    -- been on the road a lot lately.

To pursue the Indigo Girls ("Girls"? tch tch...) rathole just a bit
further; I would characterize them as "Contemporary Christian Acoustic". I
bought the CD based on the acoustic instrumentation and harmonies in
"Closer to Fine" (which I saw on VH1), and generally like the sound, but
quit listening to it because of the persistent religious messages. I don't
like being preached at.

    Re .304, I love all those songs, too, Nancy.  "Joshua Tree" is one
    of my all time favorite albums.
    
    Re the Indigo Girls, I bought the single cassette of "Closer to
    Fine" based on the discussion here.  I think I'm glad I didn't buy
    the whole tape.  They have pretty voices but their sound is just
    a little too folksy for my current taste.  It reminds me of a lot
    of the folk music that was popular back in the 60's.  (I discovered
    heavy metal guitar leads since then!) :-)

    Not only is "Trouble Me" a fine song, but the entire album, "Blind
    Man's Zoo", is on my list of the best albums of the year.  Not only are
    the songs a joy to listen to to, but Natalie Merchant's thoughtful
    lyrics deal with a range of subjects from unwanted pregnancy to U.S.
    policy in Central America.

    In fact, I would say that the lyrics to "Trouble Me" are probably a
    little more conventional than those of the the other songs on the
    album; but it is still a great song.

Yup, It is by They Might Be Giants. I agree, I really like this song,
but I have no idea why I like it. Get your hands (ears) on a copy of
their latest CD. It's called Flood. It's packed with good songs like
Birdhouse. The CD has 19 songs. I'm listening it to right now. (This
is where the party ends...)
