I was talking to a young woman in our facility today, and when she
told me she thought she should start job hunting, I asked her what
she would really like to be doing. (She currently has a service
type of job with little career potential).
She would like to take some night classes, but hasn't been able
to afford to. (DEC can't help since she's a contract worker.)
She doesn't think she is interested in computing.
This young woman is apparently very bright and capable, and performs
her job quickly and very capably. She is a few years out of high school.
What kind of career counseling is available these days for someone
like her? Can anyone recommend anything specific in the Nashua,
NH area?
Back in the early 70's I remember a wonderful program at Everywoman's
Center at UMass/Amherst where women could select from a number of
interest tests and skills inventories and after taking them could
attend groups in career options and receive a few hours of free
career counseling. Is there anything like that in southern New
Hampshire? If not southern New Hampshire, what about in the greater
Boston area?
Thanks for any help you can give. I'd also be open to recommended
reading (maybe I'll show her "What Color is Your Parachute?").

The YWCA in Worcester has some great classes, all on sliding fees.
Their phone # is 791-3181.
Another great book is "Wishcraft"...wish I'd found it years ago!
I wish her luck!

I am aware of a career counseling book called "What Color is Your
Parachute?"
Could this course be based on that book?

The best source for career counselling in southern NH (last
time I looked, Lowell and Worcester were in Mass . . . ) is
the Nashua YWCA's WOMEN'S RESOURCE CENTER. They're in the
phone book.
There's also a Nashua Women's Network that meets on [alternate?]
Tuesdays at Howard Johnson's off exit 5. Their meetings are
always announced in the _Telegraph_ well ahead of time. I'm not a
member but a couple of my neighbors are, and they say the
connections they've made have helped immensely in making career
choices.
