    What is the latest status on mounting AlphaServer 4000/4100 systems
    in non-Digital racks? I have two separate sales opportunities where
    the customers have built-in "standard" 19" racks in their computer
    rooms and refuse to purchase our racks. If they can't use their
    own racks, they will not buy Alpha.

	The 4000/4100 is designed to mount into an industry standard 19" RETMA hole patterned rack. Engineering only qualifies the 4000/4100 in the specific rack that we sell. This means we go through a series of lengthy (and costly) tests to insure all regulatory standards are satisfied worldwide. A customer can purchase any vendors equipment and mount it into a rack. The customer then assumes the liability should any safety standards be violated. Will the 4000/4100 mount in a customers rack. Yes if it is a 19" RETMA rack. Will the system work. Yes if the air inlet temp is kept below 35C. But it is up to the customer to determine that the rack will not tip over or violate any regulatory standards. Dennis

	CSS also sells a rack mount kit for the 4100. It is a ball-bearing slide for front access. The standard 4100 rack is a friction slide and intended for rear access. CSS part no is 2T-4100R-BA.

	But again, mounting an AlphaServer in a non-digital rack is illegal, not just "not-supported". (Unless you are in a country unfettered by the FCC). And the CSS part is now the "standard part": CK-BA30A-BA

	It is not illegal! The ability of a end-user or OEM to rack mount any thing they deisre is and always will be there. Digital's liability in these cases is limited. The FCC requires complience if the product is to be resold. It can be waivered if the buyer agrees to this in writing. Saftey issues with weight, balance (or lack of it), etc become the responsibility of the person(s) who installed the equipment into the rack provided the mounting instructions were followed and were adequate. If a customer rack mounts a device that is not sold as such, then all bets are off. Also, FCC requirements are no more stringent than that of other countries. Many will perform random tests of equipment that have certifications and if they fail, the product can be removed from the market, the company banned from doing business in that country, and the CEO or the responsible person for certifing that product can be jailed and fined! The FCC will maybe fine you 'if' someone complains and the interference cannot be resolved.
