    Valentine's Day?  Bah!  Humbug!

    I bought my kids presents... Matthew an autobiography and Clayton a
    T-shirt that says "Mommy Loves YOU!" :-)  with cards of course.
    
    And I don't feel much like giving Rafael anything... so I guess that
    means I should. :-(

    well, since I'm not dating anyone, I'm hoping for a cheaper Valentine's
    than last years... (being engaged then... :-)
    
    our college and career group is having a dinner - the guys are cooking
    for the women... too bad none of the details are worked out - we just
    know we are, but we don't know where or when exactly on sat...
    
    oh well, should be fun anyway...
    
    did that once before at school, since males outnumbered female 3:1, the
    guys treated the women to an enchanting evening of dinner and
    entertainment (in the form of skits and songs... quite an
    experience).  We blew 'em away - had roses and escorts to and from the
    dinner (door to door service)
    and we did it all ourselves (with a little advice from our moms (who
    were thrilled that we were doing it... :-))
    
    I guess if you adapted it, it could work for couples, guy cooks fancy
    dinner... or a group of thrify couples could work together...
    or find some friends who like to do that and have them be
    waiters or something... :-)
    

	I special ordered a book on audio cassette for Jamie (mentioned
	elsewhere in the file) and a CD he's been wanting.

	Of course, I get the pleasure of listening to both, but it
	wasn't intended that way.

	I felt this was more practical than flowers...

	As for romance, I haven't quite figured that part out yet.
	We tried to go out last year, waited an hour for a table
	with an 8 month old baby, and left after ordering due to said
	baby becoming very sick just after we were seated.  Not romantic
	for us or the other couples around, I'm afraid.

	I'm considering ordering our favorite dishes from the local
	Thai restaurant and surprising Jamie with them for dinner.

	

    our church is having their annual dinner/newlywed game nite.
    It sounds as if it's a blast, this will be our first time going (for
    obvious reasons).  Actually it sounds as though one could get
    themselves in hot water real fast. I'll have to try to control myself.

    I compose a love letter to my wife, telling her how much I appreciate
    her and how wonderful she's been, mentioning the high points of the
    year.
    
    The kids will be farmed out to a wonderful single mother who has no
    plans.
    
    I will cook a meal, served on the china with candlelight with me in my
    navy suit and her in something she feels special in.
    
    I will give her the gift I have for us which is the love letter, and
    enrollment to the  Campus Crusades Family Life conference.
    
    We will finish the evening praying for each other with each other, )the
    ultimate in romance in my opinion).

    Every year is different with us....it has ranged from the full-blown
    deal (candy, flowers, jewlery) to the cheap (a hershey's candy bar).
    
    I think Valentine's Day is a sham - why do we need Hallmark to
    tell us that this is THE day to show the one you love how much
    you appreicate them?  Mabye I would feel differently if I didn't 
    have a thoughtful/romantic husband, but he does thoughtful things
    on a regular basis and I'm glad he does it when the spirit moves him
    and not because society puts him on a guilt trip.
    
    This year, we are meeting with the accountant on Feb. 14!

I've tried to buy *my* wife some.  It was quite a successful venture.  The 
transaction copmpleted with me signing away my assets on a small form, and 
an employee of the local store encapsulated the goods, together with a 
receipt, in a small paper bag.

It seemed quite legal and above board to me...  Is it proscribed on your
side of the Atlantic?

    Is a matter of fact I was perusing the advertisments for just that this
    weekend in the Sunday paper, (we dont buy it,it's delivered
    automatically) (that's a Nazarene joke).  The prices are quite high if 
    you don't buy on sale.

    I personally would like a dinner out with my wife. I don't have a need
    for candy or jewelry or any of the other V'day stuff... Just a night
    out with my wife would suit me just fine.
    
    I'll be buying a single rose for my daughter and some flowers for my
    wife... BUT, for me, just the dinner with my wife..! Hey, I'm simple!

Dan dragged me in.  It was on our Christmas shopping excursion that will 
live in infamy!

I don't enjoy buying lingerie anymore - the price really takes the air 
out of the outfit, so to speak.  Can't remember the last time I did,
as a matter of fact.  The good looking stuff never feels good and the
good feeling stuff doesn't usually look good, plus it is often in the
way.  So anyway, the cost/time used ratio is way out of balance.

    I'm always uncomfortable buying my wife lingerie.  The mall closest to
    us has a Fredericks and a Victoria's Secret in it (what's her secret
    anyway?).   Whenever I'm in there, I get the feeling that everyone is
    staring with the thought "cross-dresser" stamped on their forehead.

I'm not afraid of the lingerie section.  I should start a business doing

husbands, they can stand a few aisles away as I hold up some things high
so they can approve from afar.  How about 10%?... the same coverage you're
giving your wives!

I'd walk right up to the counter and say, "this one is for Andrew's wife,
and this one is for Dan's wife, and THIS one is for MY wife."  Hmm...
better rethink this.

Okay, I'll say, "I'm BUYING this for Andrew's wife..."

    you mean Karen... but I'm sure I'll never LIVE that one DOWN as long as
    oldies but goodies are around the conference. :-) :-)
    
    BTW, I've taken to wearing footies!  :-)

    For my wife, she will get some flowers.  I'll make up a menu with some
    construction paper and it will be similar to this:
    
    APETIZER:  ESCARGOT IN CROTE WITH BLU CHEESE
    
    SOUP: ONION
    
    SALAD: SPINACH WITH BACON DRESSING
    
    ENTREE: VEAL SALTIMBOCA ALA MAC (I'll flambe this at the table)
    
    DESSERT:  PINAPPLE/GINGER ALE SHERBET MCCLUSKY
    
    I'll use her Fitz and Floyd dishes, I'll select a really good but light
    red wine, probably Italian.  We'll use her antique stem ware, some
    candles and we'll play a little Kenny G and Frank Sinatra "Songs for
    Lovers".  Later, we'll dance to some Stan Kenton and I will fix her
    some decafinated expresso.  I'll wear my tuxedo, and she'll be in
    something elegant(don't tell her, but she always is).  If we're lucky,
    she'll put on some of those things from Victoria's Secret before we
    fall asleep in each others arms.  Then'll I'll clean the kitchen in the
    morning before she wakes, and bring her coffee and juice in bed.  I'll
    probably send her a card at her office and write something mushy on it
    like "I love you!"
    
    I wish I could get excited about her...
    
    For me, I would like a dinner like I fix her, but then I'm the cook...
    so hopefully she'll have tickets to a college baseball game for the
    weekend, so I can enjoy the game and we'll eat hot dogs and hold hands.

    Some hints I've learned buying lingere.
    
    Go to Victorias Secret rather than Fredericks.  Even if you buy the
    same article, Fredericks tends to have a bit of negative conatation
    associated with it.
    
    Ask the Sales lady what the women are buying for themselves.  If you
    are wanting to make you wife happy that is, if it is for you, get what
    you want.  If your squemish about shopping there, just go to the
    counter and ask for someone to help you, tell them your wifes size and
    generally what you want,  She will bring it up for you.
    
    If you don't know the size, this works on dresses too, get one that you
    think is a little small, and get the most expensive you can afford. 
    She will be flattered, don't make it to small, and when she exchanges
    it she can get exactly what she wants without it looking like you don't
    have a clue what to get, much more personal than a gift certificate.
    
    My wife prefers silk camisoles, with matching robes and tap pants, an
    expensive proposition, but she is worth it.
    
    While you may love red, you wife will probably prefer a blue or black, 
    My wife feels much more romantic with something very suggestive rather
    than exposing or as she says vulgar.
    
    What do men want?  Time, Time alone with their wife, totally dedicated
    time with their wife, no TV, kids, bills or books.  My favorite is
    taking a long hot bath while my wife sits in the bathroom and we talk,
    talk and talk.
    
    How do you give time?  Coupons, make up several coupons redemable at
    any time for 1, 2, 3 hours alone, if possibe with kids, a coupon for a
    movie, my favorite is a coupon is for 5 pairs of pants and shirts ironed. 
    I do my own ironing, and hate it.  Also a coupon for a full evening of
    allowing your spouse to pursue a hobby with you handling all kid
    problems and phone calls.
    
    Also remember you spouse will get great joy in telling her friends what
    you did for her on Valentines day, so Hallmark holliday or not, it is
    worth some extra effort, besides while we should do these things all
    the time, sometimes most of us need a reason.

Not a matter of fear, but of decency.  It's perfectly kosher for a husband
to buy his wife something that it would not be proper to bandy around in
general conversation.  Not for the husband's sake, or even only the wife's,
but for the sake of anyone with a due sense of modesty.  An extra degree of
inter-personal liberty is what makes the marriage a special relationship. 
That isn't shared generally.   cf 1 Corinthians 12:23, which extends by
association to the garments associated with 'unpresentable areas'.  Aspects
of Romans 14 are also relevant.  Modesty in the store is for the benefit of
all around, rather than just one individual shopper. 

Meanwhile, the base note extended to 'what I would like to' .... After a 
breakfast in bed (accompanied with flowers, which would be part of the 
breakfast if it were for rabbits, Ann...:-), a brief flight to Paris, for 
an exotic dinner, wander along the Seinne, with weather arranged to suit of 
course.  Probably jewelery presented at the dinner....  Maybe stay a few 
days... ;-)

But then, valentine's day doesn't figure so big for us this year, as a 
later celebration - we'll have been married � century.

Valentine activity is really associated with those who have not yet
declared themselves.  The 'overhang' to married couples is both a result of
marketing pressure, and a need to take every opportunity to demonstrate the
vitality of the relationship.

	I got Jamie socks for Valentine's day one year.  They were
	a particular brand he liked, but didn't buy for himself
	because of the cost ($4.50 a pair).

	I almost always get him some "milk chocolate almond bark" from
	a local candy shop.

	Hmm, I know there were two other valentine's days in there while
	we were single, but I don't remember what I got him... sigh...

	

    For a single man, I believe he would like something you do together.  I
    still want my wife to take me to a baseball game, a basketball game, a
    football game and share with me.  If it was a picnic that would be
    nice.  Just something we did together.  Gifts at Valentines don't seem
    to me to be the loving expression that doing something together is. 
    But then there are those men that would like a book, tie, cuff links,
    home made cookies, etc.

Mark,  The fashions come round again.  And I've never been one for
extremes.  ([Fashion never bit with me ;-)  A good quality garment can make
a reappearence.  Though, perhaps I'm just re-living my youth... ;-).  But
it's worth it if it makes Ros feel young again.  You'll learn, when Joy is
facing the kids all left home, etc...

I agree, Nancy, though I don't think it is a critical item of garb.  In 
some schools here in the UK, ties are part of the uniform for girls  (or at 
least, used to be.  Not sure these days).  I always felt that was totally 
inappropriate.  Now had that been the practise at your school....

Mark .... Neru jackets?  The with-it-guy who sits near me doesn't know 
either.  The nearest I can get is Nehru jackets? - but then, I've no idea

    Andrew, what we call a naru(sp?) jacket is much like... ok, picture
    this.... Take you normal everyday sport coat.... turn up the collar to
    where there is a "priestly" little square cutout at your neck. 
    
    Ok, now... with the collar up, place a chain around your neck with a
    madalion of at least 2" in diameter attached to it.
    
    In the US.., the hippies would where this style of clothing. 
    
    No, I was not a hippy, I just liked that style of coat/jacket back
    then. Yes, I did where the madalion too.

I am not sure.

I have seen some tie-dyed shirts in the recent past (but still releatively
few of them).  Miniskirts have made a comeback but even those are beginning
to lengthen again.  Women forgot how difficult it was to sit in them,
or stand around all the time.  Fashion is often uncomfortable, and
comfort often wins out with most sensible people.

We have a curtain of hanging rope-work at the kitchen instead of a door.  
It avoids my wife feeling claustrophobic, yet gives an degree of privacy 
(almost irresistible to passing visitors ;-).  It seemed a suitable 
compromise after trying it with and without a door.

But if it's not de rigeur... :-(

    Actually, to tell the truth.... I never had a leisure suit.  I never
    had a Nehru jacket.  I never had puhka beads.  I never even had a peace
    symbol necklace or belt buckle. :-)   I guess I just didn't get drawn
    into the leisure suit, Nehru, or hippie scenes.  Maybe I'm allergic to

    It was particularly distressing when I was taking my kids through the
    Smithsonian and I pointed into one of the cases at light that spun
    around and projected images on the wall and told them that I used to
    have one of those.  Couldn't afford a lava lamp.  They just looked at
    me the rest of the day.
    
    Back on topic, I went out this afternoon and bought Sarah a hardcopy of
    Gone With the Wind.  She said she's always wanted to read the book.  I
    thought the movie was boring.  Tomorrow night our church is hosting a
    couples dinner and the youth group is watching the kids.  Wish I could
    afford more but...

    I've spent time in GA, and all I remember are the flies and gnats!
    course this was south Georgia...

    play with a Madagascar hissing cockroach.  They are (for real) 3 inches
    long, and make hissing noises when disturbed.  They are actually clean
    as far as roaches go.  A friend of mine had a couple as pets.  He fed

    HEY!!  GREAT NEWS!! JUST IN TIME FOR VALENTINE'S DAY! :-)

    I just heard on the radio this morning that the medical researchers
    have determined that chocolate is NOT bad for your cholesterol level. 
    Though it is loaded with fats (why else do you think it would taste so
    good?), the fats are not the kind that increase cholesterol.  What a
    revelation! :-)
    
    The report did go on to note, however, that they are talking about
    CHOCOLATE, and not the gooey, cholesterol-raising fillings that
    somethimes make their way inside the same. :-)

    Hi Y'all,
         First off I want to wish everyone a Happy Valentines Day,
        especially all the wives,girl friends,and moms out there.
         You know all of us men should feel pretty grateful to God,
         for what He has provided for us men.I just wanted to tell
         what we did for all the wives in my sunday school class.
         First off the wives challanged us,(the husbands)that we 
         couldn't give them a real romantic evening.And most of the
         replies like what Pizza Hut and a candle,or Chef Boy Ardee
         and a candle.And no one would take the challange except me,
         so I arranged a catered Italian dinner with candle light.
         And the way it started was the husbands were the waiters,
         etc...We met them at the door with a rose,toasted them with
         sparkling cider,then dinner of chicken parmesean and lasagne,
         salad and garlic bread.And there was romantic music playing
         in the background,and we ended the night with presenting them
         with a box of candy and having to tell them what they meant to
         us.Well thats what we did on friday night.
         And at least for me it came from my heart because I think they
         all deserve it,of what we put them through.Thank You Jesus.

	PS - had a lovely valentine from Jamie - he took us (Emily and
	I out to the restaurant of my choosing, then we went out to
	a small "coffee house" afterwards for cappucino and dessert...mmm
	mmm !  This morning, I greeted him with his gift, Dr. Dobson's
	"When God Doesn't Make Sense" on audio... he's got one more
	gift coming tonight.  He's excited about the book (so much so
	that when I invited him to join me and my group for lunch
	today, he wasn't sure if he'd rather stay in and listen instead!!)

    Happy Valentine's Day to all.  The last one triggered a memory for me
    that I wish to share.
    
    I was the leader of our High School Fellowship, which we named,
    "Fellowship of the Carpenter".  In an effort to help our kids tackle
    the dating problems, we did a series on dating.  We had done a
    community services work project with another church's high school group 
    and made some friends with them.  So we arranged to have them select
    two boys and one girl and we selected two girls and one boy as "blind
    dates" for Valentine's Day.  We had a room, we called the Church
    Parlor, which had a kitchen adjacent and a large fireplace and
    overstuffed furniture.  Our assistant Pastor, Youth Minister donned a
    chauffer's uniform and used a parishoner's limo to pick-up and deliver
    the dates to the church.  I did the dinner, flambe'ing the main course
    at the table, and using our group's members to serve in a very formal
    way.  The dinner was in front of the fireplace, with a fire and with
    candles on the table.  The room had a piano, and one of our members
    played dinner music and was joined by another person playing the
    violin.  After dinner, our Pastor took them to Community College
    musical performance and returned them to the church for homeade ice
    cream and then drove them home.  I served up ice cream to all our
    volunteers and we played volleyball and basketball, so that all had a
    good time.  We did decorations, menus, favors, etc. to make it very
    special and keep the entire group involved.
    
    We used this to show about group dating, how they could use
    imagination, etc. and learn about one another, without pairing off and
    getting too far too fast.  "Bottom line" = we all had a lot of fun, the
    groups ate 15 quarts of my ice cream and wanted more.

    I spent my Valentine's evening working out and sleeping (took a nap
    when I got home from work)

    course I did participate in a dinner Saturday -
    the guys in our College/Career group made dinner for the women in the
    group.  We picked them up, complete with a rose for each, and had a
    candlelight dinner (sort of - 2 candles and 14 people - ok so it was a
    dinner with candles...:-)  We sang "You've lost that loving feeling" to
    them, which they got a kick out of (which was good, cuz we hadn't
    practiced), and had a "romantic" movie for them, only I'm not sure how
    many people liked it ("A Farewell to Arms" - real depressing life
    without Christ - I had read the book, and couldn't make it through the
    movie- fortunately my "date" for the evening is not a night owl and was
    ready to leave before the movie was over. *whew* :-)

    I don't know where to put this, so this will work.
    
    We had a special service Sunday night, a Valentines service if you
    would.
    
    We started out with Love Songs, every chior performed a song of love to
    God.  From the preschool to Adults.  Then we had the most moving
    section called Love Signs, where the 3 ladies who do the death ministry
    signed the songs, if you haven't seen this, the emotion in this is
    incredible, very moving.  Next came the Love Offering, then Love
    Stories, testomonies of Christians.  It was just a very special service
    with one outstanding performance.
    
    We have a man in his early 40's that is mentally handicapped, and has
    been going through a bout of cancer.  He asked when they were planning
    the service if he could sing a song, the music director welcomed him
    and told him to bring the music or a tape.  It is well known he cannot
    sing at all, but loves to make a joyfull noise, and is not discouraged
    at all.  He brought the tape "Lean On Me"  the new version I think by
    DC Talk.  Not just the music, but the vocals as well.  He was nervous
    on stage, kept his hand in his pocket, and looked around everywhere.
    Finally the vocals came on, and he sang along with them, and it sounded
    pretty bad if you were a critic, but the look on his face made you
    forget all about that.  He forgot words, but kept on.  It looked like
    some of the youth were going to start to snicker, but then Julie, one
    of the members of the chior started clapping in time with the music.  I
    joined in, and several others, soon everyone was clapping in time, and
    the youth were definately enjoying it and not making any faces.  The
    look of joy on the singers face when he left the stage will never be
    forgotten.  Afterwards all he would say was he was so happy to be able
    to do something for the Lord, after all the Lord had done for him.
    
    I don't think anyone remember any of the other performances save the
    Signing, which was later.
    
    They tell another story of this same individual a few years back.  He
    was coming to the church, and his hygene was not good at all and he
    would stink.  People tried to avoid him, but he came every Sunday.
    
    One Sunday after church one of the deacons came in, and this guy was in
    the church picking up all the bullitons and inserts that had fallen on
    the floor and pews.  The deacon asked him what he did with the
    bullitons, he answered he threw them away in the trash can on the
    corner.  When asked why, he answered, because everyone has to do
    something for the Lord, and this is all I can do.
    
    It really hits home, with all of our talents and resources what do we
    do for the Lord?

VALENTINE:

    (3rd century) martyr.  Two Valentines are listed in the Roman Martyrology
    on 14 February: one a Roman priest martyred on the Flaminian Way,
    supposedly under Claudius, the other a bishop of Terni who was martyred
    at Rome, but whose relics were translated to Terni.  Thje Acts of both
    are unreliable and the Bollandists [a group of Jesuits who write about
    saints' lives] assert that these two Valentines were in fact one and the
    same.  Neither of them seems to have any clear connection with lovers or
    courting couples.  The reason for this famous patronage is that birds are
    supposed to pair on 14 February, a belief at least as old as Chaucer
    [late 14th century] just as the custom of choosing and calling oneself a
    Valentine is at least as old as the Paston Letters [15th century].  On
    the other hand, some authorities see the custom of choosing a partner on
    St. Valentines Day as the survival of elements of the Roman Lupercalia
    festival,  which took place in the middle of February.  Whatever the
    reason, the connection of lovers with St. Valentine, with all its
    consequences for the printing and retailing industries, is one of the
    less likely results of the cult of the Roman martyrs.  No churches in
    England seem top be dedicated to Valentine, but from 1835 his relics are
    claimed by the Carmelite church in Dublin.  Feast: 14th February.
