| We have a cottage on Lake Sunapee and I've fished there since
I was about six years old. I'd be happy to answer any questions
you might have...There's a good ramp at Georges Mills, but the town
has started charging for it's use. There's an unimproved ramp at
Blodgett's landing, but the water is very shallow beyond the immediate
launch area for a 100ft or so. I put my 19 footer in here, but leave
the motor up, and paddle it out. This leaves you very dependent
on the weather. Small winds make paddling a 19 foot boat next to
impossible. There are some cabins near Newbury harbor. I can't recall
the name of hand. I think there's also some at George's Mills. You
might try calling Sargent's Marina. Call directory assistance for
either George's Mills ( I'm not sure if this is even considered
a real town) or New London NH. The Sunapee chamber of commerce might
be able to help also. There's usually cottages for rent around the
lake. Depending on how much they get for cabins these days this
might be an alternative...The people who rent on our beach are
getting around 800.00 a week. It's a natural sandy beach, with the
cottages right on the water, so it tends to be a little more pricey
then other areas may be.
Sunapee has smallmouth, salmon and laketrout as the main gamefish.
You'll also find perch, pickeral, brook and rainbow trout, cusk,
bluegills hornpout and suckers. The smelt population has been way down
over the past few years and the salmon have suffered. Last year most
were on the lean side. For some reason the laketrout seem to be
doing fine. It doesn't seem to make sense. The smallmouth fishing
has been fantastic. Lot's of fish in the 4lb range are taken. I've
been diving in this lake for years also, and notice a large increase
in the number of bass I see. At the same time the water clarity
has gone down somewhat, and the rocks in the upper 20 ft of water,
which use to be completely clear of algae, now are covered with
it. It just doesn't figure. In the past 30 years they've constructed
sewer systems completely around the lake. Stopped dumping from
houseboats while at the same time pretty much stopped development
around the lake through zoning, and the water quality in the last
5 years or so has suddenly gotten worse. Don't get me wrong here.
It's still beautiful. You can see down 20 ft when the sun is at
the right angle, and testing shows it's plenty fit to drink, but
something is changing....
Anyways, the end of July will be some great smallie fishing. Top
water in early evening can be a blast. Just toss a yellow jitterbug
around any rocky point. It's always been a hot topwater bait on Sunapee.
Laker's will be down deep, on the bottom. Salmon can be caught trolling
at around 50ft over the deeper holes with downriggers or lots of
leadcore line. Sunapee has to be one of the most beautiful lakes
in New England. Have fun, but don't tell anybody! If you end up
going let me know what you'll be fishing for and I'll point you
to the best spots to start at...

I took your advice and drove up to Sunapee on the 4th. I rented a cabin
at Sargent's Marina, Georges Mills for the week of July 22nd. They said
that on the 3rd, a 16 lb. Laker was taken. I'm really looking forward
to my vacation with my brother. I'll post a full report afterwards.
