I'm trying to fix a Sear's Gamefisher electric trolling motor (15 lb
thrust version) that my son bought used. It runs but the control switch
on the console doesn't change speeds or shut off. I have checked out
the switch with an ohm meter and it looks OK. I can't see anything
wrong in the wiring in the console but I don't have a manual or a
circuit schematic. I can only guess how the motor changes speeds, that
is multiple windings on the motor. Can someone discribe how the motor
should be wired or have a circuit schematic? I'm wondering if there may
be a short in the wiring that runs down from the console to the motor.
    Any suggestions?
    Jim

| 1580.1 | Sounds like a short across the switch | SEMIU5::MATTSON | Wed May 01 1991 12:03 | 18 | |
| Jim,

I've never had to mess with mine yet. I'll look and see if I have
a schematic for mine at home tonight, even though I have a different
brand the wiring should be close.

I would guess the opposite of what you've stated. I don't believe
there's multiple windings. I would think that the Switch unit is set
up as some type of voltage/current divider network. Different settings
develop more or less voltage drop on the motor with the rest be dropped
    across the switch network.

Sounds to me like you might have a dead short across the switching
network and the motor is probably on the top speed, meaning that the
maximum amount of voltage and current is going through the motor.

    						regards,

| Jim,

Is there a Sear's store near you? If not, let me know as my wife
works at the one here and maybe we can scrounge up a schematic through
    the service and parts dept..

| If you haven't fixed this yet, you might try in the boat notesfile. I
posted a motor/gearshift problem there and I had several replies that
helped me fix my problem. KP7. (VICKI::BOATS)

    Good luck,
