From rt 9 west take 148 south, about 3-5 mile down take a right
and you should be at the noth end of the lake between Quaboag and South pond.
From rt 20 take old boston post road about 3- 5 miles up take a left
and your there.
Don't know how thick the ice is there, there are alot of people there
on weekends. The ice on a nearby pond out there is 4" to 8".

Walt, read about a large pike coming out of South a couple of
weeks ago. They had performed a netting study and noted a couple
of pike over twenty and "several" over ten pounds. I have caught
bass there in the summer. I believe that there is a trout
    	population also.....Les can verify that.

| | The MA state record pike came from South Pond. I met the guy
who caught it at the Glenco Farms bait shop a couple of weeks
ago. I've never seen a larger fish come from fresh water, judging
from the picture posted there. He said he couldn't wait for South
to freeze up (which is certainly has since). They've had cars
on Quabog, adjacent to South, fwiw.

Another thing about the pike study there is that they found the pike
to be in schools rather when they are usually loners with one here
and one there. Noone know why. I thought I heard they brought up
a couple over 30 lbs, ie, state records, but it could be exaggeration.
I do know that someday I'd like to catch a pike, any size!

South has lots of rainbows and browns as well as bass.

| | Its to bad that South Pond is falling victim to the popularity
of this file and just about everyone I run into that fish's that area.
I have been fishing the pond for about 6 years. It hasn't been overly
crowded until this year. It seem since the T&G did the story on the
pike population it has been determined to be place to go, more so
than when the record pike was caught. I have never caught a pike there,
but some nice bass and trout. The fishing isn't fast and furious, but
reasonable. It saddened me to hear a individual from my building went up
there last weekend and caught "6 Nice Bass", that he and his partner kept
for dinner. It sucks to see a place you fish regularly go down the tubes
with crowds and the kill mentality. This pond is not big, and is sure
to go down the tubes with the pressure its see's now.
Time to find a new haunt

Actually this study took place at Quabog, not South Pond where I hear the
fishing has been terrible ;-)

Also blame the Worcester T+G for mentioning South among a handful of other
places whenever trout stocking takes place in Worcester county. And for the
article about the state wanting to turn it into a Prized Trout pond (complete
with aerators).

| | I don't think trout stocking announcements are as much of a problem as
the last article. Those announcements have been going on for years.
I would see the same faces during the trout season. It didn't seem to
matter. Now its South Pond this and South Pond that. Everyone has to go
to South Pond. I would be curios how far people travel to go to this
    mythical utopia of a pond.

Ken....I am almost positive about this. They did also do a netting
study on Quabog. They found few pike and smaller sized pike. But
South was where the big ones were found.

And I don't know what the big deal is about people hearing about
South Pond.....with the large Pike pulled out of there the
information on South has been out and about for the past three
years. I don't think that the article in the Worcester T&G has

Hi Gitzit, if you're referring to my note,.33, where I said:
> Another thing about the pike study there is that they found the pike
> to be in schools rather when they are usually loners with one here

I was referring to a study done at Quabog, not South... a good
friend of mine who is on the lakes committee for Quabog told me
about it. I didn't hear any specifics about where "the big ones"
were (Quabog or South), just that there were some big ones out there.
> years. I don't think that the article in the Worcester T&G has
> done anymore harm than the word of mouth.
Maybe not. I live about 10 mins from this area, and have been fishing
South for 4 years now (all for spring + fall trout). I don't read
the T+G anymore because it's too damn conservative and they have
	terrible Bruins coverage! ;-)

are wrong about the T&G article. You cant get near the place now.
No problems before. It seems those types of articles attract the MEAT
fishermen, that the only beef I have. Hell if I really want to get out
there I just get there earlier. As for Glenco Farms, Great People.
good prices. I think she likes me :-). On another note, I hope this state
adopts a closed season for bass during the spawn. It will put an end to
easy meat hunting and tournaments that displace the bass during the spawn.

      Rich, Ray,

Sorry I can't agree totally. "A closed season during the spawn"

You've got to be kidden !! Do you know how long a spawn actually is?
I belive its "29 days" from start to finish. Now depending on
smallmouths & largemouths (these guys spawn at different water temps)
can easlly spawn "weeks a part". Or how about the spawn @ places like
Quabbin, compared to some of the 12' to 20' lakes. There are too many
variables to control, a closed season during a spawn would be
ludicrous. Sorry guys, I can't agree. Taking a bass off its bed will
most likely have no ill effects, there back on them in minutes. I feel
the half mile (or how ever long) ride in the live well/cooler is a
     different story.
