| This is a reminder that the 2nd Merrimack River canoe trip of the 1990
season will be THIS SATURDAY at 10:00 am. It is a mild whitewater run
(class 2-) from Moore's Falls Crossing in Bedford to Thornton's Ferry
in Merrimack. Our first trip was a lot of fun - 19 canoes with over 40
people enjoyed a beautiful day on the Merrimack River. I was glad to meet
some folks from DEC there - come on out and join us! See the base note

| This is a reminder that the 3rd Merrimack River canoe trip of the 1990
season will be THIS SATURDAY at 9:00 am. It is a more challenging
Class 2+ whitewater run from Stark Landing in Manchester to Depot Street
in Merrimack. See the base note for details.
Note that last week's heavy rains should make this trip pretty exciting,
to say the least. Be prepared to get wet! You should know how to swim and
have some basic canoeing skills to participate in this trip. If you don't
feel comfortable with a little whitewater, don't despair - join us for
our Fall Foliage smoothwater trip in October!
We had a great turnout on our July trip - 36 canoes! Come on out and
join the party!

| This is a reminder that the 4th and FINAL Merrimack River canoe trip of
the 1990 season will be THIS SATURDAY at 9:00 am. This is a smoothwater
trip suitable for canoeists of all abilities. We'll be doing the stretch
of river from Thornton's Landing in Merrimack to Greely Park in
Nashua. There should be some beautiful fall foliage colors along the
river - maybe not peak, but they do tend to turn a little earlier along
the river. Refer to the base note for details.
As an update on the last canoe trip in August, the previous week's heavy
rains brought the water level up substantially for late summer - we all
had a blast! The trip started at Stark Landing in Manchester and ended at
the mouth of Souhegan River in Merrimack (the planned Depot St take-out
was scratched due to high water). Of the 17 canoes on this more
challenging trip, we had 4 canoes tip over in the first set of rapids,
and 3 tip over in the 2nd set - all were safe and enjoyed the swim! At
lunch, tripleader George May showed off a little of his whitewater
kayaking form in some standing waves at Goff's Falls. We also had the
opportunity to speak with Ralph Goodno, the new executive director of
the Merrimack River Watershed Council, about some of the concerns and
hopes we have for our stretch of the river. We're all looking forward to
our season finale in October! See you on the river!

| Merrimack on the Merrimack
The 1991 Canoe Trips on the Merrimack River
Five canoe trips have been scheduled on the Souhegan and Merrimack
Rivers this year. All of these trips are being sponsored by the
Merrimack River Watershed Council, the Merrimack Conservation
Commission, and the Merrimack Parks & Recreation Committee.
These trips are FREE TO THE PUBLIC BUT YOU MUST BRING YOUR OWN CANOE,
LIFE JACKET, and bag lunch. No registration is necessary. All of the
trips will be on a Saturday, and they will go rain or shine. We plan to
launch at 10:00 am; please arrive at the meeting place for each trip
around 9:00 am in order to shuttle vehicles to the take-out.
May 18 - Souhegan River
Jun 29 - RiverFest
Jul 20 - Flatwater
Aug 17 - Whitewater
Oct 12 - Fall Foliage
For our 1st trip is on the Souhegan River this Saturday. Meet at the
bridge near the Amherst Country Club on route 122 about � mile north of
its interestion with 101A.

| Fellow anglers living in Merrimack, NH and who plan to be at town
meeting this Thursday may want to vote YES on article 18. This article
will appropriate the funds necessary to build a boat ramp at Depot
Street in north Merrimack on the Merrimack River. This site, the only
public launch between Manchester and Nashua, is now severely eroded and
unsafe.
Although the railroad culvert it passes through restricts
access to pedestrians and small boats (cars are too big to pass
through), it still presents a great location to provide people with
access to the river for hiking, fishing, and canoeing.
This project is supported by the Merrimack Conservation Commission,
Merrimack Board of Selectmen, the Town Manager, and the Budget
Committee. The bottom line is the project is already 80% funded: we
received a $25,000 federal grant (the project won 1st place in the NH
awards competition) and we received a $15,000 donation from
Anheuser-Busch. The federal grant requires the town match the amount,
so we are asking the taxpayers to ante up the remaining $10,000.

RIVERFEST DIRECTIONS: Take Everett Turnpike to exit 11. If
coming from the south, take left turn at end of ramp onto
Greely St. If coming from the north, take right and then another
right to get onto Greely St. Drive straight through next set of
lights (DW Highway) and follow signs to parking area.
CANOE TRIP INFORMATION: The canoe trip is a leisure 2-hour
flatwater trip that starts in north Merrimack and ends at the
RiverFest site. BRING YOUR OWN CANOE AND LIFE PRESERVER. Some
rentals are available at $25/canoe which includes equipment &
transportation of canoe to launch site - you must call Back
Country Tours at (508)433-9381 in advance if you need to rent.
We will meet at 9:00 AM at the Depot Street canoe launch. From
the south, take Everett Turnpike to exit 12 - take right at end
of ramp and then next right onto DW Highway. Take next left
onto Depot St (Getty gas station on corner). From the north,
take DW Highway (Rte 3) toward Merrimack until you see the
Getty gas station on the left - take left onto Depot St. Launch
is at end of street.
The MERRIMACK RIVER WATERSHED COUNCIL, founded in 1977, is a
non-profit citizen's organization with the mission to restore
and protect the Merrimack River and its watershed through
innovative and timely education, communication, and actions that
1) stimulate public participation in local, state, and federal
agency decision making, and 2) reinforce a sense of natural
resource stewardship. Call the council's office at (508)363-5777
for more information on how you can become a voice of the river.

| My wife, son and I plan on joining the MRWC organized paddle to the
Riverfest. If any of you fellow noters who don't know me by sight
happen to be there, be sure to say hello, we have a red Mad River
Explorer.

| I look forward to seeing you there Don! Actually I won't be able to
make the canoe trip itself since I'll be helping to setup the
RiverFest site that the trip ends at. Be sure to say hello when
you land. I'll be wearing a red cap with a Rainbow Trout sticking
out of it! I swear! I just picked it up at the Paperama store in
Bedford. It's hilarious!
