My wife and I were out for a walk around the Great Meadows Wildlife refuge in
Concord Ma yesterday afternoon.  We saw some of the largest fish that appeared 
to me to be Carp in that area.  Many over two feet and some that looked as if
they were three feet long. 

They were feeding on both sides of sluice through the dike/dam that 
separates the impoundment area.  

We also ovserved them in the shallow water/grass between the Concord River
and the dike/dam.   These were in schools that looked to be thirty or 
more large fish.  They were coming out of the water on top and 
exposing much of their bodies.  As they got closer it looked as if there
were two fish in touching each other when they were partialy out of the
water.    

Anybody ever fished for these fish?  Are they edible ?  I certainly
would not eat any bottom feeder anywhere near that area in any case.

P.S. Fishing is NOT allowed within the refuge area.

	Last year I caught a good sized carp with a fly rod. I was impressed and look forward to trying again. Were any of the fish you saw outside the refuge......

	I used to catch big carp out of the Merrimack river in Haverhill. We used to catch them with corn. They'll take worms but so will the eels and there were a lot more eels than carp. My biggest ever was 42 �" long. Not sure what it weighed. They're fun to catch. Best fight came from one that was 36" even. It was missing it's upper lip. It just about stripped my Mitchel 300 of 6 lb. test (about 300 yards) before I turned it around. I got it near shore and my brother spooked it and out it went for another run of about 150 yards. I finally landed it after about 45 minutes or so. I wouldn't eat them out of the river but it is (one of ?) the fish that jewish people call gelfiltefish (sp?). RAYJ

	I've seen a few big carp taken from the Merrimack river behind our condo in N. Chelmsford. They are a bit ugly, with scales the size of fingernails, but I do believe that they are edible and that they're popular for food in Europe. In fact, carp were brought over from Europe years ago and stocked in American waters, but they did not gain the popularity over here that they enjoyed over there - apparently they have not always had a positive effect on all the waters they were stocked in. 	Some of the fish were on the River Side of the Dam/dike so am sure that some are in the river at that point. You would only be able to get to that point with a boat. I have seen power and unpowered boats in the river at that point. There is a place on the road that goes west from Concord Center past the Colonial Inn that you can put in. There is a sign there that tells you not to eat the fish caught in the river at that point.
