I just checked the Mass 1990 abstracts, and largemouths are 7 lbs. 8
oz., and smallies are 4lbs. 8 oz.

the minimum size for striped bass is this year.

33 inches and holding. My father caught a few schoolies in the Cape Cod
canal last year. You have to fish the slack tide though, otherwise the
current strip and snags your rigs.

For the record...I'm glad to see the increased limits on the ocean
beauties. I can remember picking up two or three in an evening from
    shore...Oh the good'ole days...sigh.

| 1391.4 | Strippers coming back to Plum Island | NAVIER::YELINEK | WITHIN 10 | Tue Apr 24 1990 13:42 | 13 |
| | I live in Newbury MA. (Plum Island Territory) where schoolies are
abundant but the big boys are few. I was in SurfLand tackle shop
last week and they have a whole lota pictures of fishermen standing
next to their big catch....some Strippers in excess of 50lbs. which
appear wellll beyond 36". I bought a book about striped bass fishing.
I'm convinced the big ones are far and few between....but can be
had if you're willing to put in the TIME. Lots of it. Living within
4 miles of the island, I'm gonna make a serious attempt at fishing
for these beautys this season. To catch a Stripper well beyond the
minimum size would satisfy me for a good long time...besides, my
fish story (picture) would hang in the tackle shop.

I would think most strippers would weigh more than 50lbs, even with their
clothes ON.

| 1391.6 | ok...they were 150# Strippers... | NAVIER::YELINEK | WITHIN 10 | Thu Apr 26 1990 09:47 | 14 |
| | I get kinda excited when I think about catchin' these strippers
off the island....especially when I see all those pictures at the
    tackle shop.

At the risk of over estimating their size and sounding like I was full
of S*&T! ..I under stated the weight.

One bit of info I did gather was that most of the people who have
landed the big ones off Plum Island are using live eels. Eels are
easily caught using traps up river just the night before you head
    out.

    Yo,

The legal limit for stippers in mass. is 36" not 33" as stated
in an earlier reply. To catch the BIG strippers you need to use
BIG baits. We fish them heavy off of Race point and a few other
spots on the cape and I found that eels 18" or better will bring
out the monsters! Just for the record I learned this from a guy
who's son caught the current mass recond back in 1982. The fish
weighed in at 72lbs. Not to bad. I also found that the really big
fish are most easily caught at night ( Midnight to 5:00 am) later
in the year say last two weeks of October into Nov. The record was
caught on Nov. 2, 1982. I see that picture of that fish everytime
I enter my favorite tackle shop in Wellfleet.

Well good luck there are some monsters out there just waiting to
    snap your 40lb test!!
