    Is anyone familiar with the ramp at Ipswich landing? Does it
    provide access to Plum Island Sound? I am looking for a ramp
    that would allow access to the Cranes beach/Plum Island sound area.
    Any recommendations?

    Hi Wayne
    I've used the ramp your speaking of about a half dozzen times, Nice
    launch area. Just take it slow going down the river as it gets pretty
    shallow at low tide. It is real easy to read with no suprizes.
    
    It will get you into the area you want to go.
    
    Another good launch spot is at the Mariner Dealer in Essex.
    
    I heard the Bluefish are in up there, Good luck

    Great, thanks for the info. Is parking a problem? I would be fishing
    nights, do you know if there are any time restrictions for the ramp ?

We used to keep our boat at the Essex marina many years ago.  It's a good 
launch ramp, but just go slow out the Essex River at low tide.  Also, be 
aware that when you reach Canomo (sp?) Point, the water can get quite rough 
as it rips between the island and land.  Once you get beyond that point, the 
river runs pretty staight for about .5 mi then makes a bend to the left.  
There's a tall spindle that marks some rocks and also the end of the river.

If you continue straight out past the spindle, you'll be in Ipswich Bay.  
Gloucester is to the right and Plum Island to the left.  Just past the 
spindle is a channel on the left that puts you on the backside of Crane's 
beach.  If you're running out to Plum Island or Crane's, make sure that you 
go out straight for a while before turning left.  There's lots of sandbars 
out there that will run you aground at low tide.

I used to have real good fishing along the shore from the spindle out to the 
next point.  The water runs deep and pretty clear (or it used to).
