1117.0. "Delaware River " by ENGLES::SANDER () Wed Apr 26 1989 16:37

    While down in Philly last week on business I took the time to stop
    up at the Yardly access ramp. That area of the river has always
    been good during the shad run. I fished there as a youngster, growing
    up in Philly.
    
    At the ramp I met a river guide. He was waiting for a party to go
    out for shad. He seemed very knowledgable and loved to talk fishing.
    In case anybody is interested I thought I would give the guy a plug.
    No, he is not related to me, just an interested fisherman who seemed
    to know his way around. He fishes a 16' LUND on the Delaware River
    and Lake Onterio. His speciality, according to the business card
    he gave me is LM bass, SM bass, Walley, Musky, Shad and Striper.
    His name is Bill Heller (215-736-8479 - that's a Penna number) and 
    he has a partner Don Fiscor (609-882-9598 - A N.J. number). On his
    card he claims to be a researcher and lecturer. 
    
    Bill told me the stripers were running wild in the river. Lots of
    throwbacks, but some nice keepers. That day bill was after shad.
    The armada was out on the river and everyone was talking like the
    fish were thick. Bill said the shad runs were great for the last
    five years.
    
    While in Philly I read the Sunday paper and Ben Calloway(The guy
    was writing an outdoor column in the Bulletn in the 60's) had an
    article about a new record striper caught in the river below
    Philly, in Chester. It was 50+ and they guy who caught it claims
    he had other on that were just as big. The fish was caught in 6
    feet of water. I have the article at home and will update this note.
    
    It appears the river has developed into a great fishing ground.
    When I was a kid we fished for catfish and carp, if we could stand
    the smell. 
    
    What about this all you hogie and cheese steak eaters. Is this a
    river that has been overlooked?
    
    Next time I go back to see this consultant he already promised me
    a day on the river in his boat.

	Gosh, I never would have considered fishing the Delaware but I did fish the skuylkil (sp i'm sure) way up river a few times. Having grown up near in the area, I was under the impression it was dead. Figure Dupont, Rohm and Haas, not to mention Schmidt's, it's gotta be dead. Then again, it can't be much worse than the Merrimac. I've had some great shad days there inspite of the uninspired surroundings. Let us know how you make out. /brett P.S. You spelled hoagie wrong :-)

	Over the past several years there have been intensive efforts to clean up the Delaware. So far the efforts have paid off....BIG!. For the last 2 -3 years, there have been reports of Stripers, of varying sizes, from the mouth upstream as far as the Water Gap (maybe over 150 miles). The shad runs HAVE been booming (right now is about prime time), although very dependent on water level, clarity, and temp. LM, and SM, along with Walleyes are also very available in the 'Big D'. Far upstream at the "FORKS", and above, are some very fine trout waters. Also, NJ stocks trout in several streams were they join the river. The clean-up efforts have progressed to the point where the traditional 'pollution block' at Camden/Philadelpia has been reduced from a year-round condition to an occasional occurence! The Delaware is looking so good, NJ F&G wants to stock Salmon and Steelhead in one of the tributaries (Muscenetcong R.) to develop a new late season fishery. Bagel

	For any of you fellow brown trout addicts.....I've caught several really nice browns just below the dam at the Cannonsville ? Reservoir (upper W. Br. of Deleware) and I've also had good luck above in the upper stem of the stream (above the reservoir)...the watershed is used by PA cities & towns and thus..water is usually drawn off during the summer..sometimes resulting in fish kills..but it has really come thru spring after spring.....
