I live pretty close to a good bass pond, but I'm about 20 miles
from the nearest store that sells shiners. I do have a stream on
my property that holds a *TON* of dace (some refer to them as
    black-striped dace or blunt-nosed dace).

Will these dace work equally well as shiners do on large bass? If
so, any suggestions on how to get 'em out of the stream and into
a bait bucket without turning them into chowder ?

    Ken.

| I'm not familar with that type of baitfish but probably the best
thing to use would be a "Shiner Trap". I know some who uses one
in the Merrimack close to the "Mouth" of the River/Ocean and puts
crushed potato chips in it and catches "Tommy Cods" which is simalar
    to a shiner/smelt.

| If you have the patience (or kids, borrow the neighbor's if you must),
get an ultralight, size 10 or 12 hook, 1 splitshot and small worms.
I get all my daise by this method and they work excellent for lake
trout, especially if you step on them and squeeze some guts out!
This is probably not a desirable condition for bass, so try them
    alive and whole.

| 879.3 | Dace work for Pike, cost me 75 cents ea. | PACKER::BACZKO | Tue Sep 20 1988 12:56 | 7 | |
| I have used Dace on some of my Icefishing trips for Pkie. I dont
see why they wouldn't work on a Bass. On one of our tournys this
year we had a 12" bass peuck up a 6" perch in the live well. It
got me thinking "are my crank baits big enough???"
