    Al Gauron's boats have been bringing in the biggest cod this year.
    I haven't been with his line in a few but the results seem to speak
    for themselves.

      Al Gaurons boats are the best, i just went on the all day boat
      and came off with around 30lbs of fillets, the main catch was
      cod but afew of us landed 6 haddock each. The half day boats 
      are into blues real good now.

    I was on the Al Goruon Blue fishing trip last Wed. night, 17-Aug
    from 6:30 to 10:30.
    
    On the entire boat only one blue was landed, though i did get a
    seagull when they tried for the bait fish.
               
    Is this a generalization - no each company has good and bad days.
    Generally Goruon's do offer good service and a convinent location.
    
    For generally better cod/haddock fishing you are much better going
    up to Maine, the extra miles are more than compensated for by better
    bottom fishing.

    I went on the all-day ride on Al Gauron's boat. Ninety feet of boat
    going 35 MPH is exciting. I went with 5 other relatives. Altogether
    wee caught 33 fish; 15 cod, 17 pollock. It was a great day.

    The service was excellent, the boat was clean. I won't rent equipment

    The best fishing I personally have had is on the Indian out of
    Kennybunkport. My fishing buddy has had better this year out of
    ogonquit (sp).
    
    I am planning a trip for half a dozen freinds out on the Indian
    in early Oct. (If they are doing friday trips then).

    Directions: Route 128 north (to Gloucester) to the 1st set of lights
    (this means going through two sets of rotaries: Exit 10). Turn right
    at the lights and go about 1/4 mile until you see some grey oil
    tanks on the left and a gas station on the right. Pull in behind
    the oil tanks and the boat and office are right there. The name
    of the dock is Rose's Warf. 
    
    I've chartered there boats 5 times now and have always had good
    fishing and a good crew. I would recomend the Island Queen (65')if 
    they still have it(it was up for sale). They just got a new 70' 
    last year (The Miss Gloucester). I would take the Miss Gloucester II
    (55') last due to the fact that she's got a rounder hull and tends
    to rock more in heavier seas. I always ask for Bill Jr. to be the
    captain. He's the captain we had on our 1st charter, No sense 
    tampering with a good thing. He has a brother Mark that also captains
    and I think his father (Bill Sr.) may be running some Whale watches.
    Casting jigs from the stern has produced the most fish on all but
    one of the trips, which produced most of the fish using bait and
    it didn't matter where you where on the boat. The bow fishing always
    seems to do better than the sides too. Of course I think the bow
    and stern results are due partly to the more experienced fishermen
    getting these spots.
    
    Capt. Bill's does subcontract under the Yankee Fleet and sometimes
    you may have to go to the Yankee Fleet docks (a couple of miles
    at the most) to get on one of Captain Bill's boats, unless you make
    arrangments to have the boat moved to Rose's Warf. (Am I rambling?
    anyway.) I used to fish with the Yankee Fleet but have had bad
    experiences with the crews and the regulars that fish on their party
    boats.

	Has anyone ever been on The Gail Francias (sp?) out of Road
    Island. What are the Captain and crew like and what kind of shape
    is the boat in? I was thinking about an overnight trip with them
    out to Georges?

    Maybe someone can help me out. I'm trying to arrange a Tuna and/or
    Marlin fishing trip for some interested people here in Acton. I
    seem to recall reading somewhere in here  about a boat from Rhode
    Island maybe(???) that traveled out to the canyon. I've looked through
    the directory for salt and deep-sea but nothing pointed me to it.
    Does anyone remember what note it was in ? Also if anyone has any
    other suggestions I'd love to hear them. What's the best time of year
    to go for this ? Thanks for any info,

    Dennis Sabo (Peptide) fishes marlin out of Falmouth.   (Offshore of
    Nantuckett and the backside of Nomans)  His boat is on the small side
    and the sport is pretty expensive compared to blues and bass.
    (400-500). 
    Dennis is quite light tackle fan and spoke about trying to flip 
    live scup on spinning gear to marlin.  Sorry but I cant speak from
    personal experience.

    	I think that the boat mentioned was the Super Squirrel II out of Pt
    Judith R.I. I believe it does some overnighters out to the Canyons. Its
    a head boat rather than a sport fisherman so the price should be
    reasonable (relatively).  
    	If no one else responds with more info I'll try to look up a phone 
    number at home.

     Tell them to be prepared to part with serious bucks and maybe even not
    catch any of the target species.
    
     Big game fishing is very much hit or miss.
    
     I think you can expect to pay in the $700 range for a full day charter
    for up to 6 people (3-5 is preferred).
    
     Since you are starting right now, try to get your trip set up for a
    midweek day on the last week of July or first week or two of August.
    That seems to be when the fish are around most consistently. Whomever
    you call will be able to give you a good idea for when the fish are
    around- just ask.
    
     I have had good luck with Capt. Tony Tolentino from Falmouth. He has a
    31' JC and is very knowledgeable. He will also extend the trip if you
    don't get into fish until later in the day.

    Thanks for the info.Is a head boat the same as a party boat ?
    I don't think that's what we're interested in. I was hoping 
    we could get an all day charter for under 500, as 400-450 seems
    to be the going rate for these size boats for most areas...I'm
    not sure they'll go for 700...I wouldn't want more then 4 on
    the boat. Even if the fish are semi active it still takes awhile
    to have a turn when there's four. I always worry that people
    will be pissed off if they don't get fish on these type trips...
    I, as a dedicated fisherman realize that you never know what will
    happen, but I go with the attitude that It's just nice to be out
    there, and know you have a chance of catching something...When
    people who are not really into fishing go for a day, and fork
    out between 100 and 200 dollars, and get skunked they tend to get kind
    of upset...

There is one question you should ask UP FRONT: Who owns the fish?

Seem simple? When you see pictures of the 300# shark or 800# tuna caught
on the Snappa or whatever, be aware that in most cases the fish belongs
to the boat. "But I paid $600 for the day!" Yeah, well, you paid for the
fun, not for the fish. 

The captain will sell that tuna for around $8 a pound; it'll be flown to
Japan that night.

     Dave Preble, capt of the "Early Bird" out of Naragansett, charges
    something in the range you are looking for. When I last talked to his
    wife, the rule was the fish were yours if they were under 55" fork
    length (roughly less than 300 lbs). Better check to make sure.
    
     Most every place will give you as much fish as you can expect to eat
    as a part of the charter, but you won't be making any money off the
    fish.
    
     Some of the guys will let you have the charter for free if you catch a
    giant (an unlikely prospect, though).
    
     Many of the charters will reduce your cost by what they think they can
    get for the fish caught (and they estimate low, but it's still better
    than nothing).

The Gail Frances is the boat that I went out on for blues at night last
September for the most productive and exciting fishing experience I've ever 
had.  FWIW, the Super Squirrel is docked right next to the Gail Frances, and 
we had a lot more action that night...  

The Gail Frances also goes out for small tuna in the 50 pound range for
about $75.00.  I haven't checked this out yet.
