Well, this happen to me last friday night.
My brother and I decided to take our boys horn pout fishing.
One 6yrs two 7yr old. We no sooner got their lines in the
water when the 6yr old catches a huge calico bass. Next my son
catches a bigger one followed by the other 7yr old catching one
about the same size. Well they were all proud especially where
their fathers havn't caught anything yet, so of course we had to
keep the calico bass, and thank God my bother caught a 3.5lb
large mouth, and I ended up with the biggest horn pout of the night.
The problem is, calico bass are so bony that I don't care for them
to eat. Now my brother and I plan to have a fish fry, and we plan
to give the boys the large mouth bass and a trout that I caught
last spring, and tell them that its their calico bass. Think we'll
get away with it ? If not any suggestions on cooking calico bass?

YO,
Pan fry em with some seasoning. Use flour with seasoning. Fillet
by running your knife right down the backbone and over the rib cage.
The meat is good and there is plenty on em.

If you think you're gonna get away with it, you'd better cut the
fish into very small pieces so you can't tell what kind of fish
it came from.

I don't know about you, but I wouldn't try to fake them out. Kids
that age are smarter than most people think, and it's not good for
them to think their old man is trying to put one over on them. Try
this: Fry up ALL the fish, let them watch the cleaning, tell them
about the bones, make sure they're careful to pick them out, and
who knows, maybe they'll like the other fish better. Besides, if
they see that the Calicos are bony, maybe they won't be in such
a hurry to eat them again...

BUT......
Sooner or later the kids have to come to an understanding of
*TRUTH* as it relates to *FISHING*.
