  Great idea Roy,  All for it if only to find out where you catch your Roach
  and Barbel.

  I live in Reading, do most of my fishing along the Thames from Caversham 
  Bridge to Scours Lane, trouble is all I catch are Perch, Chub, Eels and
  the occasional Bream (these only when night fishing).

  I take it you catch the Roach and Bream in the Kennet, would like to know
  where..

  This year I have joined the Reading & District A.A., so will be able to fish
  most stretches of the Kennet plus lakes and pits. 

  Lets hope we can get a notesfile going for the UK.

             We MUST know what kind of fish a roach is. Here in New
    England we do not fish for insects.

    Earlier this year my brother caught a 17" fish that resembled a
    trout, but had rather large scales in a dark golden color, with
    the back and tail darker than the middle. The guys at the local 
    sporting goods store said it was probably a "Roach"; junk fish,
    not great for eating. I filleted it for my brother to take home
    (he said his wife didn't like it) so there you have it - must be
    a "Roach"! What an awful name for a fish! 
    
    I'm interested to find out if this is the same as the Roach in the
    UK.

    Sounds like a carp to me. :^(
    

    No, not a carp, because it doesn't have a bottom feeder mouth like
    a carp - it looks more like a trout, except for the scales. The
    scales are not nearly as big as those on a carp. It's a nice looking
    fish, all shiny and golden colored, but tastes lousy.

C'mon on Guys,  Are you two trying to wind me up ? .... now who would want to
kill and fillet a iddy biddy 17" fish, the only time we would kill one that
size is if we intended to use it for dead bait when fishing for Pike....

Nightcrawler,  looking back in the notesfile, some of the weights from the
tournaments you guys have been in have not been exactly "heavy-weights"....

mind you, I guess we Brits ought to feel good being as we hold the world angling
title ....

Serious now, have you had any trouble with groups that are "anti angling?,
this year we started to get these "bird brains" who have picketed outside of 
tackle shops, painted windows and pavements (think you call them sidewalks) in a
attempt to get noticed and get fishing with rod and line banned, trouble is, it 
got quite a bit of TV coverage in this area.

                          ROACH

 A Roach is a Euoropean fresh-water fish (Rutilus rutilus) of the Carp family
 (Cyprinidae).

 It is silver white with a greenish back.

    The roach is not the biggest fish found in British waters, but
    is probably the most popular. The record weight is just over 4
    pounds, although the average size tends to be 6 to 8 ounces...
    ...thats about 8 to 10 inches long.
    
    They can be found in nearly every freshwater lake or river.
    They have a silvery body with a green back and bright red fins.
    
    My local river contains Roach up to 2 pounds in weight... but
    catching them is another matter ! My best so far is just under
    a pound and a half.
    
    While I'm here, let me describe the Tench.
    
    The Tench is only found in still waters or slow moving rivers.
    The record weight is 14 pounds, average fish are about 2 to 3
    pounds. My best so far is 5 and a half.
    
    The fish is a lovely dark green colour, blackish fins and red
    eyes. They are tremendous fighters.

    If you've just joined RDAA this season, you should'nt have too much
    trouble catching barbel on the River Kennet. There are several good
    stretches , but the quieter waters upstream towards Newbury seem
    to produce the bigger fish.
    
    The Thatcham Angling stretch at Rainsford Farm, Thatcham is fishing
    very good this year. The best I've had so far this season is six
    pounds, although I,ve seen them aproaching the double figure mark.
    
    
    The RDAA water on the Kennet at Thatcham upstream from the railway
    station holds some really big barbel, I may join Reading later on
    this year if it starts fishing well in the late summer.
    
    May be a good idea to meet somewhere half way . I can tell you
    more then .... bring a map.

    Could the dreaded COWALSKI be alive and well in the UK?

    
    	I've caught some houndy looking fish like that and couldnt
    	figure out what is was, in slow moving rivers/stream sounds
        like it wasnt a carp could it possibly just be a sucker, they
    	run up and down the streams sometimes you can catch them in
    	shcools of 20 or more,,

     didnt the COWALSKI fish drowned??

    We finally managed to teach it to swim but only in small
    numbers. Shcools of 1 or less only..
