    I'm starting on a project of customizing a boat,in hopes to get
    it wet this time next year.
    
    Using the same principles as a Gyro-copter w/out the over head
    helicopter type blades,I want to take the engine,rudders,and prop 
    from the back of a gyro,and mount them onto a flat bottom of
    considerable length.
    Using two back seats of a Subaru Brat(light durable plastic) as
    swivels.
    and a 20+lb thrust electric motor on the front end.
    complete with live well...etc.etc...
    
    I have connections to obtain Gyro parts,and can get most everything
    else needed pretty easily...I just need the right boat for this
    project.
    
    My questions are:
    
    1 - Would say a 17' jon boat be too narrow for this project considering
    this may be slightly top heavy with the speed this will do? (average
    gyro does about 55 - 60 in the air).
    
    2 - Are there any jon boat type's that are made wider?
    
    3 - Or should I go with a low profile tunnel hull,for stability?

    Skip it and just get a nice little bass boat.

    Forget the expensive "gyro" stuff (this *isn't* supposed to fly,
    right?) and go the VW engine / wooden prop route - ie. just build
    a 'glades boat.

    I dunno, Bud, we'd better jump in the propeller boat and go look 
    for him!

    Sure,
           If you are serious about this buy a stable light weight boat
    with a decent beam ~8' 6" or so. A cateraman sp? might be wild.
    Mounting those blades will require it. Get stainless steel blades.
    you'll pull out of that holeshot quicker........

    I thought about the cateraman style...instead of a trampoline type
    deck...make it solid...it'll be nice and wide..
    
    so the narrow jon boat type would be out of the question...?

    What do you plan to use this boat for? It sounds nifty for blasting
    through weed-infested shallows at high speed, but I expect with
    all that weight high up it would tend to be unstable in any kind
    of rough weather, and much more subject to the wind than others.
    Also, anyone who has ever been in one will tell you they are 
    VERY NOISY; LOUD, THAT IS!
    
    If you only want to build this because it seems "neat" (or whatever),
    I'd give it some more thought. If you want to be creative, look
    in the latest issue of Popular Science - there's a piece on a boat
    that appears to be a cross between a bass boat and an air boat;
    wide platform, shallow draught, powered by an outboard *raised up*
    so that the business end (propeller) is just far enough into the
    water to do its job. Looks pretty nifty, and easier to handle than
    an airboat. Check it out...

    Yeap, those things are sure noisy!  Saw lots of them down at
    Okeechobee.  You could hear them coming for what seemed to be
    miles away!  Sounds like a plane is about to crash on ya, then
    you see them coming thru weeds.  Roland rolled his twice last year
    chasing swamp rabbits around the glades.  donmac

    If you live in worcester county, they have a picture of what
    i think your looking for in mondays evening gazette. it's 
    seems to be about an 16 foot jon boat.check it out. i happen
    to cut out the picture so if you cant get ahold of the paper
